Another question...
Pardon the ignorance, but Im new to this.
When I buy a Blu-Ray disc, is the disc in 1080p or 720p?
Or is that simply the screen resolution??
Thanks
M

Blu-ray discs are 1080p. DVDs are 720p.
What your TV can show is a different matter.

....
Thank you.
So 720p movies are no different from plain DVD's that I would watch on my HDTV.

Hmm... I also found this:
How Does Standard DVD 720p/1080i/1080p Upscaling Compare to Blu-ray and HD-DVD?

Good link. What you'll actually notice depends. For example, I can definitely see the difference between our standard def DVD player (S-video) and our blu-ray player that upscales a DVD to 1080p.

I agree.
I just tried a Blu-ray Disc this morning on my 37" HDTV (1080p) and to be honest, I realised that at this screen size, there doesn't seem to be much difference between 1080p, 720p and DVD quality. The Blu-ray Disc was, incidentally, 1080i.
Im goin to try with a 1080p disc, to see if anything changes. I doubt anything will.

Are you sure your TV is 1080p? Nearly all the 37" sets I've seen are 720p. It might take a 1080p signal but still display 720p.

Sorry man, that's not correct.
Although most commercial BluRay discs are indeed 1080P (1920x1080 progressive scan), a range of other formats are also part of the BR spec sheet - including 1920x1080 interlaced, and 1280x720 both progressive and interlaced.
Also, you call DVDs 720p - incorrect. 720P is short for 1280x720!
DVDs are 480i (720x480 pixels interlaced).
Neither BR or DVD supports 480P.
