Laptop makes choppy noise while playing DVD
Hi,
my Dell Inspiron 1520 all of a sudden makes weird choppy, crackling noises while playing DVD's.
Video is fine and when I play movies directly from my HDD, audio is fine too.
Do I have to replace the optical drive?
Thanks so much for any help!

Is it only when playing DVDs? For example, does it make the noises when reading a data CD?

Any DVD or CD with sound.
Thanks!

So the sound is coming through the speakers, not from the drive itself?

yes, I think so, but the noise is only when I play a CD or DVD not when I play music or movies from my hard drive

When was the last time you cleaned the Optical Drive? Walmart and other places sell disc drive cleaners... That may help. Also, have you gone to the Dell Support site and checked for updated firmware/software for the optical unit?

I've cleaned the drive with compressed air, but it didn't make any difference.
I will check the dell support later today for updates, thanks for that!
The big mystery to me is just that the drive doesn't make any noise when copying a CD or playing a data CD, but only when audio is turned on...

The cleaner I referred to is not compressed air. It's a disc that has tiny brushes on it that actually wipes the laser...
Are you talking about noise from the unit itself, or output through the speakers?◄ it is what it is ►

The problem is solved! I did a system restore today back to the day when the drive was running normally, maybe it was some kind of a software problem...?
Anyway the noise is gone!
I'll get one of the cleaning discs anyway, I never cleaned the laser before.
Thanks for all your help here, I really appreciate it!

Yea you get that allot when software is reading it wrong. Alnother alternative is to get a external DVD Copier of CD drive.
