Well, surround sound would actually make it like you were there, since the sound is all "around" you.

    How about 5.1 or 7.1?

Why do you only have one speaker "dude"? Get yourself some cheap stereo speakers and check out Pandora Radio - Listen to Free Internet Radio, Find New Music

No, encoding... In a movie or video game the audio channels are encoded for the proper speaker in respect to where the audio should be coming from in the movie or game... like front-left, rear-right, center, etc.

For me, it's an extra advantage at knowing where the bullets are coming from.

Ever been to a movie theater!? Now there's a good poll! Which movie has the best surround sound or audio effects? IMO, Twister.

I like movies, and to have a good experience watching a movie, you need good sound. I inclined to argue that high quality sound is more important than high quality video.
Most music is engineered to be listened to in stereo, having the sound come from different places help build the affect. Listening in only mono you're definitely missing out on a lot. Especially in movies, and video games if you play them, but also music too.
Really kind of a silly question.

    I would only add this:
If you close one eye... you will see your environment from a monocular point of view. Try It.

Walk around a bit, and check out how many things you bump into because of your visual impairment. Lack of depth/peripheral perception is most often thought of as a visual impairment, but I would say that it also has auditory impacts as well. Try crossing a busy intersection with only one ear open... Where is that traffic coming from?

This is a strange response, but my vision is actually partially monocular, I only see out of one eye at a time. Don't really have an explanation for it. Both eyes work fine, and I switch back and forth enough that there isn't a dominant eye, but it all happens unconsciously for the most part. Ultimately you learn different means for judging distance (like determining which object is in front of which).
Really makes 3D movies kinda useless though.
