Laptop outputting DVI signal instead of HDMI (no audio)
I recently got a new HDTV and wanted to hook it up to my laptop (Gateway NV53, W7). The video works fine, but there is no sound. I'm [now] aware that this is a very common problem, but after a day of trolling the internet for solutions I realized that my situation is unique.
The 'HD Audio Device" in 'Playback Devices' always says it's not plugged in. Installing the Realtek HDMI audio drivers changes nothing. I've updated to the latest CCC, audio and BIOS drivers.
I'm using a 1.3V HDMI cable and my TV says:
"1360x768 60Hz DVI"
It isn't the cable, as I've gotten the same results with another one that works fine for the devices it's usually connecting. And it's not the TV, since the same thing happens when I connect my laptop to another HDTV.
I really hope there is some way I can make my laptop output the correct signals, but I haven't a clue how, since there are no [seemingly] relevant settings in the BIOS, CCC, or Control Panel.
Help please !Last edited by pavichokche; February 21st, 2011 at 08:39 PM.

Disable DTS or any surround sounds options. My guess is your TV will only respond to PCM 2.0 (stereo).
Good job, friend-of-friends!

Most laptops will not send the audio over the HDMI cable. With both of my laptops and the one desktop that had an HDMI hookup, I hooked up the headphone cable from the rig into the audio in. You may need to look in your TV manual to find the correct input to go with the HDMI

Thanks for the quick replies
If you could please elaborate on that. I don't know where or what DTS is.
This is what my playback devices window looks like (disabling the SPDIF Interface doesn't change anything (the few times I've tried).

I understand, but this laptop in particular is supposed to be able to. I've also read online of people who have used it with HDMI and had audio. As for my TV, it's very simplistic (not too too many settings), and according to the manual it just receives what comes in. It says that you can also connect a DVI-HDMI cable in any of the HDMI slots. That is what it is indicating, in fact, that it's receiving a DVI signal (because of the lack of audio perhaps). The issue is [no doubt] from my computer.Last edited by pavichokche; February 22nd, 2011 at 12:58 PM.
