I re-formatted my computer, I've had this problem before, but it was months ago and I cannot remember how to fix it.
All I did last time was give my computer specs and someone helped me fix it first go... I hope that can happen again.

You need to download and install the drivers. If this is a prebuilt machine (dell, hp ect) you can go to their website and get them. If not you'll need to know the manufacture and model of the motherboard you are using and you can go to their site and get them.

I had my computer built custom, I had sound the other day before I reformatted.
I've tried downloading the appropriate drivers, but it won't work.
Last time this happened, I was told to download a programme & it worked. I just can't remember what it was or which forum I asked on.

    I've tried everything.

There is no program, just drivers, and unless you give us your motherboard brand, and model, no one can help you.(I see you did)

This is not an uncommon problem, in fact everyone in the world, that dose a clean install, except for true recovery disks, has to reinstall sound drivers.

No program will do anything with sound, until the drivers, are installed.

I'll see what I can find.

Actually now that he has posted a little more of the pertinent information it might help to know exactly how you have your audio setup. Or more to the point what source are you using? The actual audio jacks, hdmi, or what?

Being that you have a via audio chipset you may actually have to download the via hd audio codecs and that is actually a program, well its drivers but it comes as a program VIA Drivers Download - VIA Technologies, Inc.

    From the drop downs select
    Microsoft Windows
    OS>Windows XP
    type of driver>audio
Product>VIA VT1708S - it should be the 6th one down

    Here are all your drivers.
Sound is not the only one you are missing, look closely, you defiantly need the chip set driver, and most likely the video driver.

Generally, you want the newest one that is not a BATA.

XP installs some drivers, like network cards, and that should be fine, unless the Asus one is newer, or you are having trouble.

Don't be afraid to ask more, as sound drivers, have a history of being difficult, sometimes.

I have done many installs, and reinstalls, with sound, over the years, to get one working.
Partial installs, mess thing up, for the next reinstall.

I have an old MSI board, and I have the right drivers, but no mater how many times I have tried, and how many different ways I've tried, they don't work, so I just threw an old PCI sound card in.

I think it is the only one that I have not been able to get working, so I assume it is dead.
When I got it, it had a Sound Blaster, so it very well could have been dead.

You're right, most drivers for sound cards, have an install program.
I was thinking of a program, in the bigger sense.

    That bring up another question.
    How was the install, done?
Did you try to install, at boot up, when XP discovered the card, or did you ignore XP, and continue to boot, so you can use the program method, in windows.

I have found when you try at boot up, it screws thing up, when you go to use the install program.

I fixed it. I downloaded a program called VIA HD Audio deck. It supports my sound card, therefore works.

Thank you, but I fixed it without reading this although this would have been the fix I had to look for.

Glad you got it working. Once I saw it was an ASUS board with that Via chipset I figured that's what you'd need. I know my ASUS board is pretty much the same way. The drivers are a PITA with Windows 7 64 bit though.

If you haven't already you should still double check the link Stroyal posted and make sure you get all your drivers installed and visit the AMD/ATI site to get the latest drivers for your video card.
