Hitachi HDX99 Audio Out to (very) old Sony Receiver
I have a 42" Hitachi HDX99 that is connected to my AT&T U-Verse cable box as well as a Sony DVD player. Both the cable box and the DVD player show video and play audio fine through their respective Inputs. However, I wish to be able to push audio OUT from the TV into my receiver via RCA jacks. I can do this individually, by running audio out from the components themselves to the receiver, but it seems that there ought to be a way for the TV to push audio out? FRUSTRATED with my efforts. Help?

Welcome to TechIMO,
Your posting is a bit confusing
I think you meant outputsI have a 42" Hitachi HDX99 that is connected to my AT&T U-Verse cable box as well as a Sony DVD player. Both the cable box and the DVD player show video and play audio fine through their respective Inputs.
So you have audio out from the DVD and cable box to the receiver and that works fine through whatever connections you have. Audio out from the Hitachi HDX99 shouldn't be all that different. Connect the RCA Audio Outputs to the receiver's Audio In and you should be good to go.I wish to be able to push audio OUT from the TV into my receiver via RCA jacks. I can do this individually, by running audio out from the components themselves to the receiver, but it seems that there ought to be a way for the TV to push audio out?
Are you saying that isn't working or what?

Current set up:
AT&T cable box into Hitachi TV via RCA video + audio cables (red, blue, green plus red, white).
Sony DVD player into Hitachi TV via RCA video + audio cables (red, blue, green plus red, white).
Audio through TV speakers, all is well. If I wish to push the audio from AT&T (just when watching standard cable TV), or if I wish to push audio from the DVD player (when watching a DVD movie), I have to swap the respective red/white AUDIO RCAs from going into the TV, and instead run them into the stereo receiver. At this time, obviously it is audio only running through my stereo receiver, nothing through the TV.
It seems that I ought to be able to have my current set up:
AT&T cable box into Hitachi TV via RCA video + audio cables (red, blue, green plus red, white).
Sony DVD player into Hitachi TV via RCA video + audio cables (red, blue, green plus red, white).
...but then run audio OUT from TV to stereo receiver, so that I never have to manually swap out audio RCAs from TV to receiver...and that there should only be one input into the receiver that handles audio for both AT&T box and DVD player--i.e. TV audio. I had hoped that the MONITOR OUT no the TV would be the solution, but it's not.

My Hitachi HDX99 has the following rear panel connections (text from the manual):

Antenna Input
To switch between Cable and Air input, go to the Channel Manager option to change the signal source CABLE or AIR.
Audio/Video Inputs 1, 2, 3 and 4
By using the INPUTS button, the CURSOR PAD ( and 􏰞
, and the SELECT button or CURSOR PAD of the remote control, you can select each video source. Use the audio and video inputs to connect external devices, such as VCRs, camcorders, laserdisc players, DVD players etc. (if you have mono sound, insert the audio cable into the left audio jack).
MONITOR OUT & HI-FI AUDIO OUT
These jacks provide fixed and variable audio and video signals (CABLE/AIR or INPUTS )
which are used for recording. Use the S-VIDEO Output for high quality video output. Component signal to Input 3,4 and 5, and HDMI inputs will not have monitor output.
Optical Out (Digital Audio)
This jack provides Digital Audio Output for your audio device that is Dolby® Digital and PCM compatible, such as an audio amplifier.
S-VIDEO Inputs 1 and 2
Inputs 1 and 2 provide S-VIDEO (Super Video) jacks for connecting equipment with S-VIDEO output capability.
HDMI 1, 2 & 5 (High Definition Multimedia Interface)
Component: Y-PBPR Inputs
INPUTS 3 and 4 provide Y-PBPR jacks for connecting equipment with this capability, such as a DVD player or Set Top Box. You may use composite video signal for both inputs.
IR Out / G-Link
This jack provides IR output to your external components (VCR, Cable box, DVD player, etc.). With this connection, your external components can automatically be controlled bytheAVnetworkfeature(OnlyHDXmodels). Thisconnection will allow you to control the external components with your Plasma Television’s remote control in TV mode.

I'm using INPUTS 3 and 4 with the set up listed above.
Thanks.

The Optical out, if your stereo receiver has Optical in, or the Monitor out really should do it. I have had a TV where the scart socket would push audio (and video) out, but only if you selected that in the TV setup menu.
Using the Monitor out, you might need to set an output option in the TV menu system.
