DVD Video Flashes

Compaq 7000 Series 7AP170
Windows XP Professional
1GHz AMD Athlon
256 RAM
TNT2 32MB video card
8x4x32 CD-RW
16X DVD-ROM

My DVD was working just fine, it would play DVD though Windows Media Player and also on InterVideo WinDVD just fine with no problems at all. One day i put in a movie i wanted to watch, and the intro was just flashing and flickering, audio was fine though. that was really strange, then the menu was fine, i click on "Play" and the screen is just black... when i click on "full screen" the video will flash just one frame then back to black screen, and audio still works fine... Does anyone know what this problem is?? I tried the drive in my other computer and same thing happens, i tried to remove it from the devices list and XP picked it up and set it back up again and it still has the same problem.

It sounds like the dvd-rom is shot to me. Strange symptoms though all the same.

If it does the same thing in another computer that definetely leads me to think that its worn out. What brand drive is it and how much have you used it?

actually, when i put it into my other computer it wouldnt play anything at all for some reason... it says it didnt have the proper dvd decoder or something like that, i just didnt want to mess with it. It came with my compaq so i dont know what brand it is, doesnt have a name on it or anything, and i hear that using CD-RW drives to play games and listen to CD's with will wear out the burner so of course i almost always use the DVD. i think its only about 2 years old

Did you install DVD software on the other PC you tried it in? Im pretty sure media player wont play DVD unless you have some other DVD software installed also.

Have you tried re-installing the DVD software on your PC? Or tried using different software?

I got a quick tip for you :-D works for me.. when i think a dvd-rom drive is shot i usually put a blank cd in... When you hear it searching for data on the cd click the icon in my computer.. When your pc throws an error, the drive is fine.. Then it's just the DVD or the encoder
