I am looking for a new 5.1 amp.
So far I have seen the Rotel RSX 972. the Onkyo X-DS595, and the Arcam AVR100, they will all (I think) do the job, and the Arcam is supposed to be the best "musically".
What makes would you recommend up to about $1000 ?

I would go the Rotel, I have one myself. Not a Dolby Digital one but a really old one, and it still works great. |

The best receivers in this hi-end catagory are the Denon AVR-5800 and the B&K AVR-307 . The Denon has the best features while the B&K sounds slightly better. Both are excellent. Unfortunately, they are both over $1,000 (more like $2,500-3,000).
The good news is that they are the top-of-the-line. Each manufacturer has similar products that you may be able to buy for less. I have the old top-of-the-line B&K AVR-202. You can get it used for around $1,000. It is exceptional.
Other manufacturers (Yamaha, Pioneer, etc.) have DTS receivers but they are more mid-fi than hi-fi. You get what you pay for. |

Not familiar with any of the models, Graham, but I sure have been mightily impressed with the power amps in my Rotel

I'm also not familiar with any of the models. Actualy, I am sorta familiar with the Onkyo......a good (older) friend of mine who has an EXCELLENT taste in high quality gear (he drives a M3 ) has only Onkyo recievers, if that helps at all.
What speakers do you have?
