CD Playback freezes PC

Every time I put an audio cd in the machine it freezes solid. This has been a problem for a while, just not the major problem.
It does this with any CD,in either CD-ROM,right after reboot. I have tried winamp,media player, did an update on both.The system CD player can't find the CD??

I can see it in explorer, but as soon as I click on one it brings up the player,and freezes.

Windows 98SE
400 AMD
ESS Solo1 S/C
Teac 24x CD-ROM
Mitsumi 4x CD-RW
Amptron 8400c.

It plays MP3s fine,and will read any onther disk, just won't play CDA.

I have tried the firmware upgrades for the drivers also, no go still.

Does this happen on any or your older CD's or just the newer ones? I can't play the newer copyright protected CD's with anything but Windows CD player. The newer CD's don't freeze my system in Win98, my system just doesn't see the audio files on copyright protected CD's in anything but CD player. I can't remember if the same thing happens on my WinXP or Linux partition.

Does your problem only happen just after reboot?

No it's everytime I put any CD in, even one I burned, If it's CDA, it won't play it.Total freeze up.

My 233 a,d 486 will play cds, why won't this retard?

BTW this is a 2 month old install of 98se.

OK, I just rechecked and I was incorrect. My Win98 and WinXP will play CDA with WMP. It's just that Windows Explorer can't see the CDA files on the newer copyright protected CD's on either partition but they can on older unprotected CDs. Mandrake 9.0 can't either BTW.

What antivirus are you using. I've had issues with Norton Corporate edition and my CD. Had to turn off autorun to get it to even display the CD contents even on data CDs.

AVG anti virus.IK can see the CD in windows explorer.But if I click on a track it freezes instantly.With either Winamp2.8, or WMP 7.0(something like that.The windows CD player can't find the CD for some stupid reason.lol

I'm running a scandisk on it now,maybe a miraculous recovery will happen

Have you gone into Device Manager to see if DMA is unchecked on your CDrom? I've seen some systems that this will cause problems with.

Have you tried a different (newer) driver on your audio card?

I will check both of those also. Something has to fix the thing.
I do have the latest driver for the sound card though.I got it when I reinstalled windows 2 months ago.

Yeah, check to make sure DMA mode is on, and also make sure that the CD isn't corrupted or was finalized incorrectly. My friend gave me a CD that was 1/2 finalized before a power failure, ankd it did the same thign yours does. My CD burner also wouldn't work and did the same thing when I had a problem and discovered the DMA mode was off.
