Surround Sound doesn't work

I'm running an athlon system with Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 and have never been able to get the surround sound to work...all that works is that back 2 speakers. I even bought new speakers and it still doesn't work. I went from the Creative Inspire 5.1 5300 to the Creative Inspire 6.1 6600 and still nothing. In the control panel under "sound and audio devices" there are options for "surround sound", "5.1 surround" and "7.1 surround" but not 6.1 (even though i've tried all and still nothing. Anyone know what could cause this problem?

does your motherboard have onboard sound? If so, have you disabled it in the BIOS?

no, it doesn't have onboard sound...

Are you using the drivers with your sound card or are they windows drivers?

your soundcard supports 5.1 speakers, not 6.1!

in Creative mixer speaker settings (or volume control advanced) you need to uncheck "Digital Output Only" and be sure you have the cables plugged into then right sockets on the soundcard.

ok im using the windows drivers..thats probably the problem!

OK, do the following. You ahve SBlive, no?

Start>Programs>Creative>Sound Blaster Live!>Creative Mixer

Go there and select one of those. Fiddle between the windows and creative mixers until you get them to work. Also, make sure everything is plugged in.
