| HELP My Network is disfunctional
Hey Everyone,
I need to ask for some help. I have a situation with my Network that isnt very good. I am using NetworkEverywhere's NR041 4 Port Router and connecting my two home PC's together to share a cable internet connection from Adelphia using a Motorola Surfboard 4100SB modem.
After giving up with the CD given with the router to create a network, I decided to create my network using Windows XP Network Set-Up Wizard. Everything seems fine when I go to Network Places and look to see that my computers are networked correctly, but here is the problem that I have. I cant share the internet connection simutainously . If one user is using IE, the other user cant get IE to run. If one user is on AOL Instant Messanger, the other can't connect to AIM.
It seems like the computers rely on each other to use the internet. I havent got a clue on what to do next to try and solve this problem. If you could please provide an information that might solve my network problem so that both computers can share the internet connect simutainously I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for Reading my thread

Welcome to the forum!
First off, you need to tell us what Operating system you have....is it XP or W98se or what?
When you say the word "aol" it scares me....anyway.
The FIRST thing I would do..at least while troubleshooting...is to turn off the firewalls on both comps. (for xp comps)
right click "my network places" click "properties" right click the local area connection click properties...and click "advanced" and turn the firewalls off.
-------------
Then make sure that BOTH comps are set to "obtain an IP address automatically". right click "my network places" clk properties...right click the local area conenction click properties....click "internet properties" then click "properties" and it should be set to "obtain an IP address automatically" and also "obtain a dns blah blah automatically"
ok...then open a dos window and type in "ipconfig /release" hit enter.....then do "ipconfig /renew" and hit enter. Dont use the quotation marks obviously.
let us know what happens

Im running Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home on the two computers and I have completed what you told me to do. Here is what I got.
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ipconfig /release
Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ipconfig /renew
Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>
I take it I just released my IP Address from my DCHP Server and requested a new one. Correct? Anyway, I opened IE successfully on one computer, then opened IE on the other and got a "Cannot display page blah blah blah" error. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Ok...this---->
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
is correct....and if you do release and renew on the other comp then you should get and IP address of 192.168.1.101 maybe or something similar.
What happens when you release and renew on the other comp??
Do you have each comp set to "obtain an IP automatically?"
Are both comps hooked to the router and the router hooked to the cable modem thru the "wan" port of the router?

That is correct. On the other computer after confirming that the router and computers are connected correctly, and that they are set to obtain an IP address automatically, I just did the release and renew on the other computer and got 198.168.1.101 just like you assumed for an IP Address. Got any ideas? Thanks!

The nic should be right because he is getting the IP address
the workgroup name shouldnt matter for this I dont think....but the comp name...hmm, not sure about that part.
I am interested in hearing what error its getting.
My guess is that the wizard set the one comp up to be sharing the ip etc.....I hate those wizards, lol.
Is it the xp pro or xp home comp that is not working??

oh, and WHATEVER you do..please go do the windows updates right away...all the "critical" ones....else youll have the blaster worm and others before days end, lol. |
