WiFi Disconnects at random!
OK, Anyone know why my wireless connection here on my laptop disconnects at random? It does it about every 10 mins or so. My signal is at excellent, so I'm confused.

i have a dwl-650 and it drops all the time, I think it's a very bad card (got it free after rebate). Friend has a Cisco 350 and it never drops.

Well it must be my card then?
The wap is fine?
I have had my WAP in the basement, then I moved it upstairs with a network cable and I still get the same thing even when in the same room.

My wireless disconnects radomly too.
Seems wireless phones and microwaves really do a number on it.

Mine did the same exact thing until I updated my wireless card drivers and changed from the default channel 6 to channel 1. It's rock solid now. Sometimes I have to tell it to connect a couple times but once it does I stay connected

I'm using a Dell mini PCI card with the same D-link router.

If you're using XP, the wireless zero configuration service will sometimes cause frequent disconnects. If your network card came with its own wireless configuration utility, use that one - and disable the WIN XP wireless zero configuration service.
The other possibility is an incompatibility between your card and router. I was using a cheap Trendware PCMCIA adapter with my Netgear WAP & it disconnected & reconnected every couple minutes. I swapped it for a Microsoft adapter & its worked fine ever since.
In theory, all the different brands are supposed to be compatible, but in reality its kind of "hit or miss"

ragtop, I don't see why they wouldn't be compatable, they are both D-Link and have diagrams online and in store using both devices.
I am using the program it came with, I have disabled the Zero configuration, but will have to wait to tommorrow to test.
Other Things:
No updated drivers avaliable.
I have changed channels a lot, using 11 now.
No wireless phones in the house @ 2.4ghz, but not sure about neighboring houses.

I just got a Linksys WRT54G and WPC54G. I asked the "helper" at Best Buy here and he said they were using D-Link in the store but quit using it for the same reason . . . constant connection loss.
I've got a couple of 2.4GHz phones, microwave and have yet to lose my connection. I think D-Link is cheaper for a reason. This signature intentionally left blank.

Do you have the check on the option that says IEEE blah blah compatible under Wireless connection/ configure?
I had that on and it would keep disonnecting....disable it and try again.

Try Microsoft update for the latest drivers ( don't laugh ) I updated my DWL-650+ and now connect at 22 Mbps and it NEVER drops out. Try it , you'll like it.

I say stick with as best of hardware you can afford when it comes to WiFi. Also, switch channels on your AP and see if that helps. Avoid using 2.4Ghz phones around unless you find a channel that doesn't interfere with it. I had disconnections whenever I brought one of our Uniden phones in the same room as my AP until I changed to channel 2, now I just get some slight static when I get really close to it.
Go to the properties of the connection, and under the Wireless tab there should be an option to disable the built-in browser.how do you disable the wireless config utility that came with XP?

Oh, I did. ;-) I also quit smoking 5 years 3 mos ago. I quit swilling coffee like a madman as well. That was a huge deal. PS, thanks Steve & Surreal. Nice to see some old regulars still here....
I should probably buy a new...
