    What operating system?

Kismet (http://www.kismetwireless.net/) is one for Linux. Also, here's (http://airsnort.shmoo.com/windows.html) some junk for running AirSnort on Windows (it works great on Linux and *BSD). If you want a general packet sniffer then just grab Ethereal (http://www.ethereal.com).

I wish I could help more, but you'll need to tell me the OS. Thanks.

Ethereal can sniff on any network interface you want it to. All it does is set the interface to promiscuious mode (sp) and dumps what it finds.

I think the key there is having drivers for the NIC, if you have them you can do it.

There is a version of Netasyst for both wireless and wired but it's expensive (I paid ~$7500 with certain options). It is also more useful than just packet capturing.

Airsnare is kinda cool for monitoring who's in your wireless area(not really packet sniffing though) http://home.comcast.net/~jay.deboer/airsnare/

Ok guys...I don`t know if this is legal asking or not, so mods if you feel it is inappropriate please delete it.

Say I use NetStumbler or any other sniffers and want to connect to the network I'm looking at, how do I do it? Say I want to leave a message saying that they need to protect their network with WEP and MAC filtering and all that....how do I do it ??

connecting to a network you do not have premission to be on is illegal. Thats why when you war drive, you have the laptop to just scan for networks. not connect. Its not illegal to map out access points, but to connect to them it is

If you want, go to the business and ask to speak to the IT guy there or who ever is in charge and explain to them that you can see there wireless network and they might want to look into locking it down.

Well, you have to use a WEP sniffer to get the WEP key off of the network. It basically consists of a program listening to the packets sent and received by the AP(access point) and then it can usually find the WEP key from the info contained in the packets. The higher the bit security(i.e. 128 Bit vs. 64 Bit) the more packets it has to listen to. (The longer it takes)

I probably shouldn't post any programs, but a google search will probably turn up all you need to know. Just go googlin'...

I normally do this to my and my client's Wi-Fi networks every now and then, just to test for security leaks.

    Thanks both for the replies.

I`m not trying to hack anything or get into networks I don't belong. I was just curious on how could someone do it.

But once you have the WEP then still I don`t understand how can a guy go on and search your hard drive or something.

I mean I have my laptop and I can connect to my wireless and everything although I don`t understand how could I see my files....by simple Sharing?
