    Lightbulb IP address conflict!

My friend told me she had the following error:

Windows system error: there is an IP address conflict with another system on the network.

shes on some time of high speed connection offered at her apartment and running Windows XP, thats all I know. Any help would be great!

Just have her run these two commands.

Click "Start" -> "Run..." Type in 'cmd' (without quotes) and hit Enter.

Then type these in hitting enter after each command:

    ipconfig /release

    ipconfig /renew

and if that doesn't work, call the ISP so they can help (because there is not much else she can do)

It means that Your IP is shared by another computer on the same network. Has nothing to do with nic vs modem nor your ISP. No two computers can have the same ipaddress on the same network. To correct, do as "dave" instructed.

If you still can't get on or renew you need to make sure you have DHCP enabled. To check :

    Right click "My Network Neighborhood"
    "properties"
    right click Local Area Connection
    "properties"
    highlight "Internet Protocol (TCPIP)"
    properties
clikc the button "Obtain IP address automatically"
Same for "Obtain DNS address automatically"
    close all windows normally
    re-boot

    Upon restart:
Your system will then negotiate for your Ip with the router that serves your network.
If you still cannot get on it is likely that IP's are assigned statically and you must see the system administrator for access.

Though with Windows XP you shouldn't need to reboot. As soon as you click ok it will change and obtain the IP from the router.

When they started coming with built-in DHCP servers.

but the router is not handing out the IP, the DHCP server is.

If you want to get technical, yes... the DHCP server hands out the IP addresses, but the DHCP server is builtin to the router.

She let the computer go into hibernation which aloud the routers DHCP re-issue her IP. When the pc came out of hibernation it assumed that the ip was the same caused the conflict. A reboot will solve this problem.

Interesting theroy, but most DHCP servers will not give out the same IP in such a short time. Of course this varies with the DHCP setup and it []imay[/i] apply here.

I have a Linksys WRT54g and it happened to me but not in a short time. I left my laptop in hibernation overnight and when I tried to bring it back online I got the same error message.

Increase the lease time and that wouldn't happen.

On a small home network, I like to set the lease time to "Infinite".

It's nice because the IPs for the boxes are always the same, and you never have to worry about IP conflicts.

i am having the same problem too. i have sbc dsl with a sounstream modem and a wireless router. i had it working before but after unplugging it due to some home repairs, this problem occured. i currently have 2 laptops into the network and everytime i turn one on, the other one is not able to connect and gives me an error message on one...and after a couple secs, the one that was working has the error message and so forth. i tried the tips above and it is still not resolving this problem. I think it maybe some settings on the router or modem that I need to change. Would love additional tips. thanks!

    the cmd error:
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : The DHCP clie
nt has obtained an IP address that is already in use on the network. The local i
nterface will be disabled until the DHCP client can obtain a new address.

Same problem but only one computer

    Hi there,

I'm also getting the Windows System Error IP conflict with another system on network...but I only have ONE computer....

My high speed is Canopy so I guess that means it's wireless.....I have a cable coming into the house and into my computer....

It's quite frustrating as it was working really well for about a month and now it disconnects me after a minute.
