I want to do this with 2 Comps... see pic inside...

I'm totally new to this sort of thing so bear with me.

I just built my daughter a comp and I would like to have her connected to the internet. Could I set it up like I have in the pic? If so, what would I need?

FYI, both comps have XP Pro.

Do you have DSL or Cable modem? You would need broadband to use a router. Also .. if you dont get a wireless router and 802.11b network adapter for her computer.. would will have to string a cable from the router to wherever her computer is.

Well the cable internet will come from the wall and go into a cable modem....usually provided from the cable ISP...then from the cable modem you go to a router...the routers today all have 4 port switches..so you just come from the ports of the switch to your computers with cat5 cables.

each computer needs a "NIC"....a network card in other words..or sometimes called an "ethernet" card.

    1. So you're saying there isn't like a cable modem that has 2 or more plugs to directly connect each comp?

    2. So it goes... cable modem, router, then a network cable to each comp?

    3. Will this affect my connection when playing online games? (I know it would if my daughter was online while I was playing, but was wondering if it affects anything with just me)

the cable modems only have one "plug"..further more they only will be giving out one IP address....THATS why you need a router as opposed to just a hub etc..the router takes the one IP address from the ISP and turns it into more Internal IP addresses for your comps......if you have a teenager having a router is a really good idea..cuz it adds a layer of protection against hackers etc by acting as a hardware firewall.

basically both connections will be full speed and wont really affect one another.

    This SMC Barricade

is what I use at home. It has an additional print server embedded so both of your PCs can print to the same printer.
It is a bit tricky getting it set up but not too bad.

    Good luck
