| Trying to get laptop to connect to wireless router???
Here's the deal. I'm at my aunt and uncles house trying to set up their wireless internet and I'm running into a big problem with the laptop wireless part. I have hooked up to their main Desktop a Linksys 2.4GHz Wireless Broadband router (802.11b). The internet connection on the desktop is fine, I'm using it now.
The problem is when I try to connect with my uncles Laptop. It is a Dell Latitude x300 with a built-in wireless card running XP Pro. The card is an Intel(R) PROset PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3A Mini PCI Adapter. the computer is saying there is a "low" connection. Is there any way to reset the networking connection on the laptop to have it run with the router?
As always your help is greatly appreciated |

Is your WEP key enabled? Are you accessing the same network the wired (i'd assume) desktop is assigned to?
Workgroup availability regarding the way you set up the network: are you making this laptop access the internet by the means of the desktop as a "gateway"?
I went through this, all of this was the problem.
Cmd ipconfig, check the ip addresses, MAC, firewall.
Oh god, this could be any of those.

I'm really new to this. so i'm going to try and answer your quesiton in order
1. how do I check the WEP key to see if it is enabled or not?
2. The laptop is connecting to the same network as the desktop.
3. should I make the desktop a gateway? my uncle wants to be able to sit in his living room or bedroom with the laptop. I'm not trying anything fancy with this.
4. after checking ipconfig it only shows me having an autoconfigurated IP Address and Subnet mask. As for the MAC, I don't know what that is. The desktop is running the freeware version of Zone Alarm firewall.
please help me get through this. this is only one of the things i'm doing for them today. |

192.168.0.1 in your browser as an address and that should open up the application for settings for the Lynksys, UNLESS they gave you an specific adress in the manual.
Once you are in this app, look for wireless, and you should see the WEP key enabled by default, YOU NEED THIS no matter what, assign it with a 128 bit encryption so it protects some from hackers and the malice parked outside sneaking in on your stuff.
Gateway i meant that once you set a network for both computers to share files and the like, the windows 2k and xp set it up in a way that the one computer you want is lettting the others connect to the internet from it. Thus, you can either do two things: run each computer on its own ip assigned connection (go into settings for the router) to access the internet or use this close computer to the router allow the other computer hook up to the internet.
ipconfig /release all
ipconfig /renew all
that should do something for both computers.
Clone the Mac addresses, this identifies each device on the network, thus your pcs in resume.
Let me know... |

Actually, I think for Linksys it's 192.168.1.1 or 1.100, my Netgear 11g is 192.168.0.1 and I'm almost sure Linksys is different. |

I'll be sure to try this out. It's going to be around 5 days to a week before i'm over by their house again. I'll be sure to update to see if it works. |

Did you run updates after you installed the card? Is the card compatible with win98 (should be).
Hmm, did you go to all the default settings the manual told you to go through?
It could be simple, but who knows, WEP key maybe? |
