Hello,
This has really been frustrating me. I have a Linksys BEFSR41v3 router. My desktop runs Windows 98, laptop Windows XP professional. I want to transfer some files from the desktop to the laptop. I ran the home network wizard in XP, made a workgroup called "ROOM", named the Desktop "Compaq" and the laptop "NOTEBOOK". Then I gave full access to the folder I wanted to share on the desktop.
When I go to Network Neighborhood from the desktop, it only shows my shared folders on the desktop, but doesn't show the laptop or any of the shared folders I have on there. When I view the network from the laptop, it shows the desktop and the laptop, but when I click on the link for the desktop, I get an error message stating \\COMPAQ is not accesible and that I may not have permission to access it.
I did not have a firewall running when I was trying to do this.
Someone help please! Thanks. |

When you set up the network did you use the network wizard on the XP machine and the floppy it created on the win98 machine? |

so they have matching workgroup names??
what about the primary network login for the w98 machine??
right click "network neighborhood"/properties ..for "primary network login" it should be "client for microsoft networks"...not "msoft family login" etc
try that

the other thing..possibly you need to create an account on the w98 machine with the same name as an account on the xp machine

You don't need the Wizard.
If you just click Share Folder without using Network Wizard, you can give it full access with a password if you want. But your network security is already compromised simply running WinXP.
Once you've made the folder to be shared, go to win98se machine.
Click on Find ->Computer
Type in LAPTOP, hit Enter.
It's found. Close out.
Right click Network Neiborhood on desktop and select Map Network Drives.
Slect a drive and type in:
drive_letter_you_assigned:\\LAPTOP\name_of_shared_ folder
click reconnect at logon
If you don't use a software firewall, then a "Internet Connection Sharing" connection is probably a good idea. Use the Network Wizard and configure in way that "shares the connection through hub or router" -something similar. Then Insert the XP cd and select "Install extra Components" -something similar. Then Choose the Network, and let it install on the desktop,(or create that floppy disk and install from it to desktop machine.
Why use it?
You can choose to leave the connection icon in sys tray. When done surfing net, right click and choose "Disable". This way your connection will be terminated and machine won't be left vulnerable (since no software firewall).
And if none of this applicable to win98, and only works with win98se,
then sorry for the post.

Thanks for the replies. I will try these out later and post if they work or not.

I changed the Network Neighborhood properties to client for Microsoft Networks and now the desktop does not show up on the network from the notebook. |

I am under the impression that without it being on 'client for microsoft networks" that you wont be able to do much networking at all...so I think you are correct to have it there but there are other settingss or issues that need fixing |

I'm wondering if it has something to do with my router settings?
When I try pinging 192.168.1.101 (desktop's IP) from the laptop, it times out and vice versa. |

You might have to reset the router too, by pushing in reset button for about 10 seconds then releasing.
Also try ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
commands
then the ping to 192.168.1.1 (router setup page - default is probably "admin" for password if you type that ip in browser address bar to get into router settings)
*win firewall needs to be disabled - hey, someones gotta say it*
Sometimes I will have to do a Find Computer from win98se machine, to find my WinXp Pro machine. I don't know why that makes it "see", but it works that way for me.
Hey JP, it's hard being in your shadow |
