2 Wireless Routers - Config?

Ok so I am a cheap ass and I don't want to buy a wireless receiver b/c I already have a wireless router and am trying to hook up to another wireless router VIA Wireless signals NOT ethernet like it's supposed to. Am having trouble finding info and don't even know if it's possible. Basically Router 1 gets cable modem directly into it's WAN port, and broadcasts via wireless to a laptop and other PC's near it via ethernet. NOW - downstairs I have my computer and Router 2 which is also wireless - I have my computer WIRED to router 2 through a ethernet port. I have disabled DHCP on router 2 and currently have also tried different channels but they are on the same SSID. WHat else do I need to change or setup or is it even possible??? Basiically I want to use Router 2 just like say a usb wireless access device.

Thanks...

It is possible with the correct equipment. It is unlikley an inexpensive consumer wireless router will have the feature though. The standard/feature is often known as WDS. Consult your two router manuals for WDS related instructions. If both do not have it (or similar feature) then it will not work. If you use WDS with WAPs that only have one radio card, then clients will not be able to connect to them wirelessly. So you would probably need a dual radio card WAP/router to enable WDS and wireless clients too.

ya i gave up after 3 hours. the one upstairs was a Dell and had a "Access Point" feature that said something like "acts as a bridge to setup a local/private network where the WAN port isn't used" so I switched them and thought that was the right setting, nope. I would think that 2 routers would work as range extenders with each other kinda like AdHoc or something.

Anyway - $40 later I got a mini usb wireless receiver. I needed it that night for a school project or else I coulda got it on ebay for half the price. Damn! - maybe I'll order one and then pack up the one i bought and return it (its not that i'm cheap it's just i hate the mark-up these damn electronics stores charge on stuff - just wait until i have to buy jewelry or furniture - {end rant}

thnx for replying

There are bridges that will also act as AP's basically becoming a bridge/repeater. I believe there may be a firmware for the .11g Linksys router that enables this. But generally speaking a wireless router, or router/AP combo only functions as an AP on the wireless side. No bridging, workgroup bridging, or repeating. You could uplink your second Router/AP but you'll need a workgroup bridge to do it if you want them to communicate wirelessly. Wet54 or equivalent.
