| Any Reason why windows cant get internet?
Ok here's the deal. I have 4 computers connected to a WRT54G Linksys router and 3 of them work. the 3 that work are laptops and the one that doesn't is a desktop with Ethernet cat5 cable connected. The Laptops are all wireless.
It's very strange that I can't get internet on the desktop. It's running Windows XP Home, just like all of the laptops (except one that's running XP Pro) All of the settings are correct, by my definition anyway. I've even got a printer shared on the desktop so that all the laptops can print BUT i can't go on the internet on the desktop. It doesn't resolve an IP from the router. that's the only problem. even if i assign it a static IP it still wont connect and I can't view websites or anything.
Does anyone know any reason why a router would not assign an IP to a computer. the Router assigns IP's to all the laptops just fine. It's just the desktop. and I know it can't be a network card malfunction because it's sharing the printer fine through IPX protocol.
does anyone have any suggestions?
thanks! |

no because I can share the printer and files accross the network just can't connect to the internet. It's either a configuration error (but i've checked my steps and it all looks good) or it has something to do with that router. I bet if i hooked up a different router it would work.
What about UPnP? i have that disabled. is that a factor?
thanks! |

Are you using DHCP? If not check and make sure you have the default gateway set correctly. Also, be sure that you have set DNS servers, that may be the issue if you can't resolve addresses. |

I do have DHCP enabled and it does not work when i set windows to "obtain IP address" or when i manually input the IP and GATEWAY and DNS Server. |

You can set the IP to be static on the router, but you would then have to set them up in each pc, try a different port on the router, make sure your not using the uplink port, normally port 1, on the router, try port 3 or 4. |
