| Is the broadband limit in the modem?
I was in my lesson today and we started talking about broadband. A mate of mine heard that the speed limit of which you can download is determined by the modem that the ISP send you. He also said it's apparantly possible to get a modded/modified broadband modem which allows you to do the highest speed possible even if you have only paid for a lower speed. Is this true? |

Yes, its in the modem. No, you cannot "uncap" it.

But it has to be possible. If the limit is in the modem then there should be a way to get rid of the limit. What if I had a 512k connectiong with my ISP but boguth a 1MB modem? Would that work??? |

a) Its illegal
b) They can and do reflash them from their end. When it boots it gets its config, meaning they control it. So, no buying one won't fix it. |

Yeah, I hate it when someone selling a service sets it up so you can't steal it. Really burns me up when I can't make everyone else pay because I am too cheap. |

Yes it's in the modem but it's not actualy the modem that controls it. It's the config file the ISP sends the modem.
It is technically possible to intercept and modify that config file thus uncapping your service. But you will be caught. You're service will be terminated, you will be blacklisted so not only will you not be able to get service from that same company again but you will have a hard time getting broadband from anybody. Possibly you could also be prosecuted.
But if you want to research it and give it a go....go ahead. |

Ang on, when i signed up with Wanadoo, they gave me a choice of having a free modem from them or using one I have. Why would I turn down a free modem? Lol... |
