Questions about VPN

i am trying to setup a vpn so that i can transfer files (via ftp). i was hoping it would be as easy as just going through the wizard, but no luck. both of the pc's are running winXP pro, both with linksys routers. one is dsl, the other cable. i simply want to transfer files between them. the only access that the router will allow is pptp. i typed in the internet ip address of the computer i want to connect to, and used my window's user name and password, but it wouldn't work. is there something i'm missing? do i need to use the router's password? do i need a domain? is there some setting i need to change? (i tried to set it up on both, with remote access enabled, etc.) thanks!

since i have multiple pc's on both LAN's, do i need to use UPnP or something to tell it which computer to access?

You will need to use a username and password that is on the computer that you want to connect to. If pc a wants to connect to pc b, pc a has to vpn to pc b and use a username and password that pc b has setup already.
