My routers stop working, yet my Internet connection is fine
I have a Pentium III 866 MHz PC running Windows Me. I have an AsanteFAST 10/100 ethernet card and a Toshiba PCX1100 cable modem. Comcast New England is my service provider. Okay, that's my background. So here's the vexing problem: I bought a Belkin Wireless Router (Model F5D7231-4) and it installed with minimum difficulty. I connected my desktop via one of the four LAN ports and to a laptop via a Belkin wireless card.
Both the laptop and desktop worked fine for ONE WEEK, at which point the LAN connection died. Belkin claimed it was the Toshiba modem. They even have a notice on their site saying that eventually (not maybe, but eventually) the PCX1100 will die. They recommend buying a new cable modem. Well, I thought "to hell witht his, why should I buy a new cable modem just because their router sucks and can't handle the Toshiba?" So I returned the Belkin and bought a LYNKSIS (WRT54G) Wireless 54G router and a wireless card.
Guess what?
Yup, the same thing happened. The LAN and wireless connections installed fine, and both worked - but then the LAN connection died. The router appeared fine and tested fine but would NOT talk to my desktop. Again, the wireless connection to the laptop worked.
If the cable modem were bad how could I be on the web for all these years? Ditto the Ethernet card. And I can't speak for Belkin but I have heard nothing about problems with LINKSYS modems.
Thanks for reading. Any suggestions are welcome.

I have the WRT54G and haven't seen anything like this. Since there are multiple wired lan ports on the router, have you tried using one of the others. Can you gain access to the WRT54G's setup? Can you see the wireless in Network Neighborhood?

Is it like just one port dying? I'm suspecting something with the network card if it is *plays X-Files theme*.

It was the cable!
Thanks for the response, but it was the cable all along!

My Linksys A/G wireless router does not work. I have no idea how to configure it. Followed the directions from the manual, called for tech support...still no network available. My other wireless network computers can't detect a network....
Can't be the router cause I exchanged for another brand new one. (tech support told that the first one's wireless system wasn't working right.....WRONG, same problem with the newer one)
Howerver, Wired ports work flawlessly.... so Linksys wireless isn't as reliable as other brands
