A couple of other lead in questions that usually occur in the same breath are what is my ip address (for pcAnywhere type links) http://www.whatismyip.com/ and then are the ports open to internet or firewall scanning from http://www.grc.com/.
With these you can start pcAnywhere host, say, and check your ip address and see if the relevant ports are actually open.
Not strictly relevant but I also like http://www.testvirus.org/, this will send mail to your mailserver, which I ocassionally find useful and better yet includes a non-virus virus that your antivirus software should recognise and block.

I suggest you purchase a cisco CCNA book to do that. It will go over the basics of networking, the routers and the CLI

Hi. welcome to Techimo. Suggest you don;t use all capitals, it's considered rude.
Not quite sure of your question, or whether it should in this thread, but I think you are asking about the port for VNC. The two ports I always forwarded for default VNC over HTTP were 5800 and 5900.
Cheers
MickI don't like sigs on forums like this.

Hi, I don't think this is really the place you should be posting this, but it depends on your particular network setup... Also, please don't use all CAPS, it is a little rude - as mentioned above...
If your DSL Modem connects to your computer using a USB cable, then you are most likely to need to get a Router (which often have the "modem" parts built-in nowadays) that gets power from the mains. There are plenty of these about, personally I've got a ZyXEL, a NETGEAR, a Linksys an ASUS and a couple of others dotted around. You only need/can use one at a time though in "modem" form.
From that device, you should be able to connect to both of your computers using network/ethernet cables. As to whether you will need to use the 8-port hub is down to whether you get a single-port router or not. The spec of your computers isn't really required for this, as long as there's a Network Interface Connection ("LAN Port") on each of them.....I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...

Hi,
It's often very useful to have a list of common ports. Here are some ways to get that information.
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority Port Numbers ~ This is the canonical, official list. IANA is the organization that actually assigns these numbers, so this is really the place to look. http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers (For the complete Directory of General Assigned Numbers, which covers just about everything you could ever imagine, see IANA — Protocol Registries)
If you're running Windows NT, 2000, or XP, this file will give you a nice list: C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\services. If you're running Windows 95, 98, or ME, look for this file: C:\Windows\services.
If you're running Linux or any *nix (including Mac OS X), look in /etc/services.
Ports below 1024 are defined by the IANA. They are called the Well-Known Ports.
20 FTP data (File Transfer Protocol)
21 FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
22 SSH (Secure Shell)
23 Telnet
25 SMTP (Send Mail Transfer Protocol)
43 whois
53 DNS (Domain Name Service)
68 DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol)
79 Finger
80 HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol)
110 POP3 (Post Office Protocol, version 3)
115 SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol)
119 NNTP (Network New Transfer Protocol)
123 NTP (Network Time Protocol)
137 NetBIOS-ns
138 NetBIOS-dgm
139 NetBIOS
143 IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)
161 SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)
194 IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
220 IMAP3 (Internet Message Access Protocol 3)
389 LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)
443 SSL (Secure Socket Layer)
445 SMB (NetBIOS over TCP)
666 Doom
993 SIMAP (Secure Internet Message Access Protocol)
995 SPOP (Secure Post Office Protocol)
Ports between 1024 and 29151 are known as the Registered Ports. Basically, programs are supposed to register their use of these ports and thereby try to be careful and avoid stomping on each other. Here are some common ports and their programs.
1243 SubSeven (Trojan - security risk!)
1352 Lotus Notes
1433 Microsoft SQL Server
