| LAN help please :(
Hi ppl,
I have a problem with my LAN, i have two pc's with a network card in each, and i'm sharing a connection using the network cards and a crossover cable, i ran home networking on both PC's (Win XP Pro) and it worked... when the main PC was connected to the net the other was, recently i've had to formatt my HDD and i've had run the home networking stuff again. I've looked in control panel/network connections and the LAN is showing as enabled just like it did before, but the problem is when the main PC is connection to the net nothing is happening with the other, the other computer won't go online even though it says Enabled in network connections and before i formatted it worked. The host PC has a firewall (It did before i formatted but it worked fine), is there something i need to do? I don't know how open ports or nothing (That's if i need too). I don't think i've forgot nothing i've sat here ages trying think and i've done everything that i did before but still no luck... Can anyone talk me through what to do from step one after the installation of the network cards? or give me some info why it isn't working when it seems i've done everything i did before when it was working? Please help me. |

Sounds like you need to re-setup network connection sharing, this is a separate function to the home network. There is a wizard for this. I haven't used it so someone else might be able to provide you with the right pointers here. |

If it were me, I would just start from the begining, and just go through Network Setup Wizard all over again

from ms help and support:
To enable Internet Connection Sharing on a network connection
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure.
To set up Internet Connection Sharing, run the Network Setup Wizard.
Important
Do not use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in a network with other domain controllers, DNS servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or systems configured for static IP.
When you enable ICS, the network adapter connected to your home or small office network gets a new static IP address configuration. Existing TCP/IP connections on the computer running ICS are lost and must be reestablished. For example, if Internet Explorer is connecting to a Web site when ICS is enabled, you must refresh the browser to reestablish the connection.
To use ICS, users on your home or small office network should configure TCP/IP on their local area connection to obtain an IP address automatically. Home or small office network users must also configure Internet options for ICS. For more information, see To configure Internet options for Internet Connection Sharing.
Notes
To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Setup Wizard.
For information about the protocols, services, interfaces, and routes that are automatically configured, click Related Topics.
Internet Connection Sharing is only available when two or more network adapters are installed on the computer. |

Well i've just tried it all and still no luck.... wow this is annoying.
Only thing i notice is when i double click Local Area Connection 2 it has the stats of it, Under activity it says Packets sent and across from it says received, i think when i setup these connections before they were constantly active, the two TV's going blue all the time, but now it sends afew packets (with the TV's flickering abit) and then just stops... and i ''THINK'' before i formatted and had this setup it didn't stop atall. It's doing my head in... |

Address Type: Automatic Private Address
IP Address: 169.254.245.143
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Does that help?? Please let me know, thanks! |

You have two computers. The network wizard must be run on both. On the internet connected one choose that option in the wizard. On the other choose the uses another's connection option. On both check the status. They should be in the same subnet and I would expect that the address type is manual not an automatic private address. Quote: |
When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, your LAN adapter will be set to use IP address 192.168.0.1. Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on your network. If these other computers have static IP addresses, it is a good idea to set them to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure you want to enable Internet Connection Sharing?
| Suggests you haven't done this correctly as yet. |
