| Wireless on multi-floor house
I've got a couple people that have asked me about putting wireless in their two-story homes and I have no idea how well it works.
My first thought was to mount the WAP/Router as close to the ceiling as possible or, run CAT5 to the second floor and install a WAP there.
I know wireless is pretty much line-of-site but just wondered if anybody has had much luck w/ it in multi-floored homes.

I really don't know what routers people are using, but I live in a solid built dorm and can get many good and very good connections from people that aren't on my floor. |

I figure, worst case, I might have to by those signal bootsing antennas which are like another $60-$70.
EDIT - Forgot to ask, what adapter are you using? I figure I'll go with a Linksys WRT54G (Router) and WMP11 (NIC). |

I have a dlink DI-514 in my two story 3000 sq ft. house. It works just fine. The router is upstairs near the center of the house and we have decent connections all over the house. |

I have a D-Link DI-624 in my Cape Cod and it works everywhere on the second floor.
I also setup a Linksys WRT54G at my daughters college house, which is two story. Routers on the first floor, machines on the second floor. The only problem I have is the girl with the laptop sometimes "jumps" networks when she moves her laptop around the house.
I can also see about 8-10 wireless networks from the apartment next door (150' - 200' between the buildings).

I'm upstairs now and in one part of the house, I've got "green". If I move about 10ft, it goes to "red". This is a WRT54G and an old Netgear MA401 (B-device), so it's not a good comparison.
I would say I'll probably be okay with both G-devices since G gets a little better range. |

both G should be fine. I installed a linky wap/router at a customer's house about a month ago and all worked fine. They had three computers total spread throughout the house and the wap was in the den.

I'm running 802.11b and the signal upstairs is still 'good' even tho I turned the NIC's and router's signal power down to medium.
