| Wireless network, to share internet.
Our telephone exchange is being upgraded at the end of the month. So finally we can have broadband.
At the moment with our dial up, the family simply moves the cable to the phone line, between computers. But id like this to change.
So onto my questions...
Exactly what kit do i need. As far as i know, i need a router? type thing for the computer that will be connected to the internet. And a wireless card for any others that wish to access it.
Unfortuantly, my experience with wireless stuff, is to be honest, not there
What sort of things should i be looking at or indeed, avoiding.
-----
A little more info.
-----
Ill be using the internet for downloading things, playing online games etc. Basically everything the 56k was crippling me at.
The other computer is used by the rest of the family mainly for browsing the internet.
My computer is the one thats always on, would the connection be better there, or the other one? Is the connection going to only be there for others on the network when the computer with the connection is on?
sorry if i ask alot. This is my first experience with anything beyond a corssover cable to play a few games!
Oh and last question, how long do you think it will take from the exchange upgrade, to getting the high speed stuff installed? Im desperate for it now!

well im not sure about the kits in the UK, but look around your computer store to see what they offer. I suggest a linksys or dlink wireless router.
Since G is coming down in price i suggest that standard.
how much are you looking to spend? |

if you have a bit cash, try www.bt.com as they have kits to wireless you to adsl broadband. bt are not the cheapest option, though, just look at your phone bill for proof of that, but it should at least give you some ideas. and just because (if) you buy the kit from them, you don't have to use them as your braodband company
someone posted this link on the forum recently, which may help you.

Basically G is upto 54 megabit and B is upto 11 megabit. I have a 802.11b access point at home and its fine for everything except copying large amounts of data,. |
