    PCAnywhere or Remote Desktop

I have a choice to make. Should I remote access my pc and network using pc anywhere or remote desktop. I already own the pc anywhere software so there owuld be no extra costs involved. Which is the better choice is my question?

I'd use RealVNC or RemoteDesktop. RealVNC would be my first choice.

GoToMyPC is also a good option, if you can justify the $$ each month.

    ***SHUDDER*** about VNC

Remote Desktop is superior in almost every way.

Last time I tried PC Anywhere it was trash.

Yes, RD is. I suppose I'm just used to using VNC.

    Thumbs up

Remote Desktop or Radmin. I like that you can change the default port in Radmin. It enables you to go to different PCs through a firewall simply by changing the default Radmin port on each PC and then directing traffic to that port to the given PC. So if I go to my cable router's IP address at port 1234, I get one PC. If I go to port 1235, I get a server, etc. Remote Desktop's default port is a pain to change, so you're pretty much stuck accessing only one PC.
    You can't fix stupidity.

VNC is clunky, a pain to configure, slow and all around a primitive at best solution.

Remote desktop will let you send drives, sound, parallel and serial ports across the connection. It is native so there is no PITA setup like VNC.

I tried Radmin at one point and didn't find it as smooth as remote desktop. The workaround for the port thing is to goto one machine and remote desktop from it to the others. Although, I wouldnt call it a pain to change, a quick registry hack.

I have a Netgear router. How can I configure that router so that it can become as you said with Radmin (specific port -> specific comp in LAN)? Thanks in advance.

well, if it's between pcanywhere (imo, Symantec has one of the worst track records for post sale support) and remote desktop, i'd go with remote desktop.

there are some limitations with remote desktop (RD) however. there are some windows settings that you can't change while you are in RD, whereas if you were using a remote control program like vnc, pcanywhere, etc you can modify it very easily.

RD is certainly more bandwidth efficient but all it's really a matter of using the right tool for the intended purpose.

all done via the port forwarding option in the router setup.

winos2mac, you will need to log into the router.

i believe netgear uses 192.168.0.1 to configure port forwarding
