| wireless router/modem. It wont connect to net.
I was super excited this morning, going from dial up to 1mbps. I should of just turned the computer on, connected the router and away i go.
After all i alreasy put in all the info about names passes DNS numbers the like.
But i click connect in the routers browser config, and nothing happens.
basically im stumped, ive configured and reconfigured the blasted thing twice now, and it wont let me on.
The little light on it shows they line is activated and ready to go. And my computer comes up as being on the LAN.
Suggestions?
im new to all this. And i thought the little wizard that asked for all the info was going to make it simple
The thing is a Belkin "ADSL Modem with Built in wireless router"
At the moment its just my own computer connected via a cable to it.

what is the exact model of the wireless router
when you log into the router does it have a ping utility to see if you can hit any websites.
And just a stupid question to make sure we are on the same page, your provider is selling ADSL internet connection |

If the router doesn't have the ping utility GroundZero suggested, you can use the built in windows ping feature. Open command prompt and type something like "ping www.google.com" (sans quotes). You may also want to manually set (if you haven't already done so) your IP/Network settings rather than allowing the router to assign them, particularily the DNS addresses. |

can your room mate ping the router with his computer?
try to ping google or something with your computer and see what it comes up with. |

Large nostril | i dont quite get what you mean, where do i do this?
GZ | nothing happens in the ping box when i do ping google from my comp. The router does, but only when i ping it from the computer its wired to.
I tried it on this computer ( in living room ) and my mate who is in another house tried to ping the router too. These both timed out, "host unreachable" |

If you've got WinXP, open Control Panel > [ Network and Internet Connections > ] Network Connections. Find the device that's being used to access the internet (usually only one). Right click the icon and choose "properties". Under the "general" tab, you'll see a list, choose "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and then click "properties". Select "Use the following IP address" and enter the information you get from the router. Now select "use the following DNS server addresses" and enter the info provided by your provider. Click ok on all the open dialogs and it you've now manually set your IP/DNS info. |

Oh, by the way, IP address is anything you want that the router will accept (eg 192.168.0.X). The Subnet Mask is usually 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.255.1. The default gateway is the IP of the router (eg 192.168.0.1) |
