Router Firewall

Hello once again
XP Pro with SP2 desktop pc = host pc
We have Thomson Speedtouch 570 Router/modem, connected to this pc (host), also have another desktop pc and 2 laptops all connecting to this router/modem wirelessly (host is wired connection). All pc's are able to log on to internet and file and printer share............so no problems there.
The problem we cant solve is how to configure the router/modem's embedded firewall , as all the pc's on our network each have their own firewall we want to turn the embedded one off.
I have followed Thomsons instructions on how to do this...........but...........you guessed it.........their instructions aren't working for me
I have opened command prompt and typed in telnet 10.0.0.138 as instructed but i get the following message when i do Connecting To 10.0.0.138...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Co
nnect failed

after this i should be able to type firewalling off (but have not got this far due to previous message).
I have checked that i am getting the correct ip number.........following is read out from ipconfig/all:-

C:\Documents and Settings\PipAndIan>ipconfig/all

I have also tried to change the NAPT ports so that messenger and bearshare are able to connect, by typing http//10.0.0.138 into explorer and accessing the thomson interphase page.
I miss being able to download music directly to this pc (can still do that via other pc's on network) and also miss messenger on this pc but again the rest of home network is able to connect to messenger.
If anyone has any ideas as to how i can turn the embedded firewall i'd love to hear from them.
Thanks for reading my problem
Pip

Send a message via AIM to xcheck2430
open up internet explorer and type in your ip address, it should take u to a control planel for your router. now, next time, do not list your IP address. its like telling the person who stole your keys your address

Posting an internal private address like 10.x.x.x or whatever is fine. Not a security risk. What kind of firewall do you have running on your workstations? Is it possible that they are blocking outgoing traffic on port 23? I'd disable the local firewall when you try to telnet. Since the instructions give you telnet directions I don't imagine you can use a gui like a web browser but it's worth a try. Might as well give that a shot but my guess is that won't work.

Without seeing your instructions there isn't alot to add. Is this a digital copy of the instructions? In other words, could you cut and paste the instructions on here? Telnet is fairly straightforward though. Not much to configure unless a firewall is blocking outgoing port 23 traffic. You could also try using hyperterminal but if a DOS telent session isn't working then it's unlikely hyperterminal will either.

Thanks for the replies todate.
I now have to admit to having had a "blonde" moment when i was trying to configure the firewall on my router. It really does help if you save the settings when you change them if you want them to work! Yes thats right, i was typing in the routers ip address on explorer allowing bearshare and msn ports but wasn't saving the settings afterwards.
I have now saved the settings and can now access beashare and msn without any problems.
If anyone else reads this hoping to find the answer to configuring routers embedded firewalls..............i hope you've saved any changes you've made to the settings and not wasted 3 days trying to do something that is relativly simple (it is for the thomson 570 anyway)
