| Access denied by access control list
My IE6 browser has stopped displaying ANY pages. Instead it just gives the 403 message "Access denied by access control list" to every one.
This all started earlier today when I visited my previous ISP's site to try and reactivate an email account that they had, without warning, disabled. I was part way through the reactivation process when I realised that they wanted to mess around with my internet settings, so I abandoned the process.
They had already changed my home page to their junk and added two unwanted items to my favourites. After this, whenever I tried to access any page, including theirs, I got this message. Enabling and disabling access control fails to help. I have emailed them, but I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas whilst I'm waiting.
Microsoft’s take on this is to recreate the internet connection to my ISP, but I’m using always on broadband and everything else works, including Mozilla Firefox that I’m using to write this. The problem must surely lie in something they've done to IE6 or the register, not the broadband connection.
OS is XP Pro SP1 |

First of all I would reccomend you use firefox www.firefox.com instead of ie. Second in answer to your question if you go to tools internet options there should be a content tab, try disabling the content advisor and see if that fixes your problem. |

I agree that Firefox is prefferable, I'm using it now, but that is not the issue. I have to have a working IE6 as I develop web sites and they need testing.
Unfortunately I've already tried what you suggest, that is what I meant in my post by " Enabling and disabling access control fails to help."
There is also the obvious need for IE to run Windows Update.

I'm afraid you are right, it only seems to cover problems accessing the MS update service.
Maybe someone could point me to a method of reinstalling IE 6 with a complete set of factory fresh options and settings? |

I actually did something similar.
The following DO NOT work:
1) Enabling / disabling / changing settings of "Content Advisor" on the "Content" tab of the Internet options.
2) Uninstalling IE by changing the appropriate IsInstalled register key using regedit (MS recommended method) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/EN-US/
followed by reinstallation of IE from MS download site.
Fortunately the following DOES work:
Simply use "system restore" from the Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools menu and restore to the last point in time before the damage was done. In my case that was a week ago.
So it would appear that my problem is associated with whatever it is that MS saves about IE6 in the system restore snapshot.

Check that there isnt proxy server settings causing problems
In your browser go to: Tools > Options > Connections > Lan Settings |

I have had the same problem.
I looked in the IE settings and the proxy boxe was ticked.
(there was no details filled in) none the less, when I unticked the proxy it seemed to fix the problem.
thanks! |

I have had the same problem when trying to setup a friends wireless network.
It only happened on one Win XP Home computer, which connected to the internet fine before the wireless router was installed and setup, but a new laptop running WinXP Home connects to the router fine.
The problem is definately with the individual computer, and after searching google it appears to be something with internet connection settings on that computer.
I havent tested this yet but I think the problem is possibly due to the router giving out an invalid IP address to that computer... DCHP problem... (making the router block access) or it could be Norton Antivirus 2002 causing a conflict (after searching).
I'll let you know if I get a definate solution. |
