    Question Web site help.......

    Hi,

I'm trying to setup a website, it's been a few years since I last did this so I'm a bit rusty. What's the best software for website design? My goal is to somehow split my ISP's alloted webspace in half so that I can run a website and FTP server. I also want to add a lnk on my website that will allow friends to access to my FTP server ?

    Suggestions

    Thanks.........

Your saying your ISP is providing space on their servers for your FTP site? I would really have to see that in practice to believe it. Webspace sure, that's a common practice and your domain name would be www.provider.com/whateveryouwant, but you'll be running an FTP site from your location.

Yeah, that was very a very ambiguous statement.

I found a program called ace FTP 3 it's free and is really handy when uploading your site! When you say let your friends access the files do you mean password protect them or just plain old download?

you can password protect a web page so where is the problem with posting files on your site for d/l. You don't need a seperate ftp to give others access to your files

thats dependant on what you want to do.

    Options:
1:Use forms and write a CGI script in the language of your choice something basic that just checks a single password
2:Use DHTML you could make a dhtml page in visual basic, just verify the password the same way as the cgi script
3:Or if your server allows it you could just get some free code for a forum and restrict access by password. Then you could post your files as you would in this forum

Otherwise just make the links obscure and hard to find so casual browsers don't find them but tell your friend where they are.
