Network Wiring setup

Ok, I just added a 3rd PC to my collection...

To get all of them networked together, now that I have more than two, I am assuming I need a common connection point..

I am on a cable modem. Do I connect the cable modem to a PC with 2 NIC's, one=in, one=out..then take the "out" line to a switch to the other PC's???..

I figure If this way works I can set the 1st pc as a firewall and that will be the one with the dynamic ip address..

I setup the two PC' with no problem but I want to make sure before I start buying more stuff..

Also, is This NIC decent?? $9.99 after rebate

yes, this will work.

Another idea is to use a broadband router eliminating the need for a host computer to always be one when accessing the Internet. It will also provide basic NAT protection for all PCs in your LAN.

I vote for a router, too. I have a linksys 4 port. Easy to set up. Works super.

Router is ALOT easyer......

lot less work
lot less hassle
then, if your main machine dies, your whole network won't die.

Yep!
I'm getting cable too, and went to the big city (Salt Lake City) Saturday with another TechIMO friend (well more than a friend... b/f)...
They have Malls there!

We went to Comp USA with Mntsnow and his wife

He grabbed the Linksys BEFSR41 off the shelf and said here, this is what I use. It doesn't get any better than that!
Ok, maybe a little better, my b/f bought it for me for a Valentines day gift!

Heres a little conversation from the board about it....
I'm doing ICS now with just a hub and dial up, but the problem of if you loose your lead cow is an issue...

Now I'm drooling over a switch too...

Well, I should have mentioned it earlier but I have a switch already that is not being used...I don't really want to buy anything at the moment ,unless really needed. (Building new house=Interest payments already..on a tight budget). Plus I am a cheapie
All of the PC's stay on 24 hrs a day anyway....I figured the firewall system would be loaded with the minimum amount 'o stuff I need ,since it will be a standalone unit...The other two are the ones that will be getting used..

Awe gee, you forgot to mention Money is an object!
Just get another NIC and do it that way. Then use a software firewall or if the "1st box" is one you can use for the firewall do it that way. It will work just fine!

D-link has a good reputation, I'm using linksys, but D-link is another one I would buy... I really only stay away from 3-com stuff... my 2 cents..for what it's worth

Hey! I never noticed you were in Shelby! I lived in Black Mountain for a spell...

Black Mountain. Ugh. We designed the cable system Charter still hasn't built there. And Buncombe, and Asheville, and Crackerneck, and Deep Gap... Ugh, those used to be my projects. Ugh ugh ugh. <shivers uncontrollably>
