Any Cisco guys here? Need to get access to IOS updates...
I've decided to follow no one's advice and order a Cisco SOHO 91. I heard from someone that IOS updates run around $60, but first I have to find out how to obtain them.
You see, I had to email Cisco to find out where I could get the software for the model I'm ordering, that's problem 1. I found the link, but now I need an account with them. OK, so I registered an account awhile back.
Now it's giving me some BS about having to satisfy three requirements (none of which I can do) in order to gain "additional access" to download it.
Am I missing something here? Oh, and BTW since their site is screwed up I can't tell you exactly what I need to do in order to gain the "additional access" for the software link, but one of them said you had to order direct from Cisco.
Do they really need to make it this difficult? How can I get the updates once the package comes? I haven't placed my order yet, I'll do it tomorrow most likely at www.monarchtechnology.com so I've got a bit of time.

You might want to hold off on that, Fox. One of my buddies is a Cisco engineer for a local company here. I'll talk to him and see what he thinks you can do if you want.

Aff. Unless you really need it.

What IOS does the router come with and which update are you looking for?
If you are stuck I run a full Cisco shop and should be able to get the update you need.
PM me if you like.

No, I can wait... YGPM (Whir)

February 7th, 2005, 02:04 AM #7I don't know what version it will come with, I'm terribly new to Cisco gear so bear with me... I'm just guessing it would be best to have the latest version, right?

With stuff like this, how important is it to have the latest version? My currently D-Link router on it always has the latest firmware revision installed, but again, I've never delt with Cisco before.

Cisco's firmware (or ISO as its called) is very stable....
the new IOS' usually have some extra features included in them.. but for the products that they have that have been around for a bit and evolved are stable.
I have to contact Cisco tech tomorrow at work to get an update to our PIX firewalls so I will ask them about the IOS for your router.. I will post back tomorrow after the chat when I get a moment...
but don't worry.. your're router will be a good one! and if all fails just phone Cisco support and ask them about it.. they have great tech support.

Eh, figured someone would say they were crap.
Actually, the Netgear 11G router I used before was crap, and so is the Linksys router I have here. So I bought the DI-604...but it's upgrade time.

Linksys is now owned by Cisco.
Every networking prodoct I've worked with (even if I had some problems which in the end Cisco could fix) by Cisco has been GOLD.. and that goes for Nortel stuff as well.
Both are great companies that I would always support.
D-Link is junk. We bought 12 of their switches about 4 years ago and all failed due to hardware (main board) problems.

Typically to recieve IOS images from Cisco you have to be a CCO partner.
Aside from that there's a handy little utility called IOShunter that has a "trial" version that will search out IOS images (only prior to 2002 for free version). I've never had the pleasure of working with Cisco's SOHO devices, but I'm sure that anything 11.2 - 12 would suit you just fine; the latest version isn't neccessary.
Not that it really means anything. Yes, Cisco purchased Linksys. Yes, some Linksys boxes sport a Cisco badge. Comparing the two is like saying a Jaguar has Ford qualities though. AFAIK Cisco has remained removed from Linksys' operations and intends to remain that way. I can't imagine Cisco wanting their name mudged with Linksys anymore than it is.Linksys is now owned by Cisco.

February 7th, 2005, 05:05 AM #16Cisco themselves had no idea how to run products for a home market, so they did the next best thing - bought someone who did. Linksys products are completely unchanged, as is the company (for the most part). The only difference is that they're now under the Cisco umbrella.

Oh, and also...
Does that 91 feature bandwidth throttling, like what you can do with the Linksys WRT54G(s) and some hacked firmware? I really, REALLY would love to have that feature, I almost bought one of those in order to use the firmware for that function...

just a heads up the QOS function for the WRT54 sucks the big one

Oh..it's just QoS ability that the firmware enables? I wasn't aware of that. My network card (Intel Pro/1000 MT PCI) supports it with the Priority Packet III application but I haven't really figured out how to use it.

the newest linksys firmware adds QOS
the hacked firmware allows more port forwarding slots, some more control over the wireless portion and other little options. (the two most popular is HYPERWRT and Seasoft. SJ and i killed our routers trying to load Seasoft. Im running Hyperwrt so far and i havent had any problems. Its based off the newest linksys released firmware) So i apologize to anyone i told you need to load the newest linksys firmware first than hyperwrt. You can load hyperwrt and it will update the linksys to the latest firmware.
I wish the QOS was alot better, espically so i could limit my ftp server and other applications when needed.

here you can see a comparison of the 7850 vs GTX 570 (GTX 560 Ti 448 is reduced spec 570, so the 448 Core would be close to the 7850 in performance, if not just behind it a hair): AnandTech |...
