    Ya, its not good for the hdd to be powering up and own alot either. Better to leave it on then cycle it alot.

    I had a similar problem, but with a laptop.
    Everytime I disconected it from Power and it ran on Battery, my NIC would turn off.
    Had to adjust the battery save features as to not turn off the NIC.
    I am guessing you have a similar issue, and should look closely at your Power saving options in both windows and BIOS.

    I increased my minutes in the screensaver tab to 1500 mins, and "touch wood" everything is OK just now, thx guys,

    p.s @ Xtreeme, what would be the problem with the hdd, is it coz the arm would not be in the docked position when it goes into a sleep, and with the box checked then this would happen,

    no, when the HDD goes to sleep it parks the heads in a safe positon.
    Only when the drive loses power can you have problems where the heads stay and scratch the paltters since they are gliding on air when moving, but all new drives have failsafes when the heads are parked no matter what.

    The problem with HDD sleep is the wear and tear on them caused by the spin up sping down.
    It wears the parts down faster then constanly on.

    He's right losing power is the worst. Ive seen laptop hdds die from it right quick, specially when running it in a moving vehicle..

    But I hear its just plain not good to be cycling them on and off all the time. Not that it isnt parked just all the powering up and down. They only have so many on off cycles so why wasite them. Course that could be just a fable I dont know. I dont risk it.

    {edit-well I guess it isnt a rumour heh}

    it does most of the time.....a drive will only withstand a certain amount of wear and tear.....just running them 100% of the time is a little wear and tear....and if your computer is going to be off for a week...yes, you'd be better off letting the hdd go into standby...but if u'r just going to be gone 10 mins....then the extra wear and tear for shutting the drive down and turning it back on is not worth it in the least. Again..I don't let mine shut off...because i know it is constantly active..but if you are a person who's computer is standby 10 concurrent hours a day..then yes...shutting off the drives is a good idea..if u'r someone like myself who acts as a file server for the whole house...then no..shutting the drives off is a bad idea.
