| has anyone got a direct cable connection type network...
...and is able to have ADSL internet sharing so that you have internet on both PCs? I have 2 comps, networked with direct cable connection (xover cable type). File & printer sharing is fine. The main PC has an ADSL modem, and can access internet fine. BUT I can't get internet access on the other comp.
Has anyone got the same setup, and have they ever got internet connection sharing to work? (not dial-up, or router/hub, but the same setup!).
I am a network novice, and have been doing this for a couple of weeks. This is the final problem. Reading up on it, some networking help site (linked from another thread, but cant find it at present) suggests ICS doesn't really work too good with direct cable network and ADSL. ???
Win XP SP2,
I have firewall switched off on both comps when trying this.
gone thru network setup wizard several times.
file & print sharing OK.
share internet connection ticked in broadband settings.
main comp gets internet OK.
when i launch IE on the second comp, it spends a couple of secs trying, then says page cannot be displayed.
there was a short time, when i had the network first set up, on dial up internet, it shared fine. not with the ADSL broadband (via USB modem) though.
i may have possibly messed up my internet options (either in IE options, or control panel), but i am fairly familar with dialup settings, and things dont seem too wrong. i have experimented with different settings, but NEVER been able to internet share with the broadband.
can anyone help?

uhh..so the comp hooked to the dsl modem has two nics??
the first computer needs to be setup to share its connection
the second computer needs to be set to "obtain an IP address automatically."

main comp has USB ADSL modem.
main comp & other comp connected via cross over cable to thier respective NICs.
i have set up main comp to share its internet connection many many many times, and i'm sure i must have set the second comp to obtain IP address automatically at some point in trying. At present file sharing & print sharing is fine with main @ 192.168.0.1 and second comp @ 192.168.0.2 |

ICS is the way to do this. Prior to buying a router I used the same setup for maybe a year.
Remove ICS from both machines. Then install it on the pc with the modem. During the installation it will tell you to insert a floppy disk and it will write some files to the disk and then instruct you to put the disk in the 2nd pc and run it. Follow the directions.

thanks Elroy, at least I know 'it can be done'.
i'm gonna try the ICS removal thing later, the other site mentions this also, but not how to do it. it doesn't seem to be in add/remove>windows compenents.
thanks also Bill. I hadn't seen that exact page, but others like it and all the network settings are as it states. I've also tried experimenting with changing a few, but usually I have all those tick boxes unchecked.

There is no need to create a floppy. You can if you like but it's just not nessa. As long as your client machines have TCP/IP installed and setup with the default settings, which is as a DHCP client there is nothing else to do there. If they're XP, then they're good to go. |

Yeah .. MS's ICS can be a real pig to get working, the disk method seems to be the most likely to work in my experience.
If you can't get it to go then try proxy (free) from: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network.htm
I've always had good luck setting this up.

Now i suppose it's time to install AVG & a firewall. |
