    Networking over city?

Does anyone know how you would network two different offices at different locations?

Couldn't you just set up 2 routers and specify IP addresses or something like that?

You have to have a clear line of sight in order to do so.

There are about 3 different ways to do this.

    1) Wireless, but not very likely
    2) A leased line between them, this will run you thousands a month and will take some pretty specialized equipment to do.
    3) A VPN link using either a router that does this or a software VPN on Linux or similar.

I would probably go for #3, but in all honesty, if you have to ask, just hire someone to do ti.

Line of sight? Also isn't there a way, because if you think about it you can do (for example) netmeeting from one comp to another, couldn't you do that from one router to another? IF it is possible, how much would it cost?

Read my list, particularly the last comment.

Not trying to be rude, but it really sounds like you are in way over your head and will most likely open some gaping security hole for whatever office you set this up for.

Line of site refers to wireless, #1 on my list.

Buy two very, very, very, very, very long network cords, connect them at the two offices, and connect them into a network hub somewhere between.

Oh don't worry about being rude, I am a teenager that does mostly house calls and this lady asked me about it and I had read about networking offices with WAN but had always wondered how you would impliment such a topology. If you set up a VNC with linux, would all the computers on both ends of the connection be able to speak with one another? Example: Computer on Net1 speaking to a Computer on Net2.

that won't work because AFAIK the max. range is like 500 feet for a cord.... anything above that and there will be no signal...

    true, but he did say
    networking over a city
and sounds like more than 500 feet to me.... besides.... I don't think it would be legal to just have a wire going into your office building and all over the street.

Depending on what type of cableing you are talking about, it's less than that without a repeater. Cat5 - Cat6 cable has a max distance of 328ft, but 1,000ft is attainable using repeaters. Fiber Optics on the other hand, can go much further. For example, there is a fiber run under the atlantic ocean. I believe repeaters are involved here.

Best bet is a Virtual Private Network, like everyone is saying. Have fun setting up a WAN.

VNC is a remote desktop interface. There is no file sharing involved.

    Leased line, wireless, VPN.

    Those are the ONLY options.

Leased line is the best but most expensive.
    VPN is next
    Wireless is last

This is done ALL the time with leased lines and VPNs depending on what you need and how much money you have.

I am really not understanding what the confusion is here. This has nothing to do with VNC, file sharing or the mood your cat is in today. It is about networks. All of them will let you do whatever you want over them, or limit what you do over them, depending on how you set it up.
