If this is the wrong forum, don't hesitate to tell me.
Back a week ago I used verizons basic 768kbs dl dsl service and ran a small slow server off of it. After upgrading to their new fios, I find port 80 is blocked for "security reasons" and isn't going to be unblocked anytime soon.
So I was wondering if there is a way to bypass this filter, or use another port without causing users (albeit few) extra trouble. There is nothing in our agreement that states we can't run servers, so I don't think it's realy breaking any rules.
Thanks in advance. |

Actually, the FIOS TOS agreement states you can't run servers off that connection of yours, as far as I know. |

Really, I must have missed it...it's not that I don't want to pay for a server or anything, just the hassle of getting it moved somewhere else is what I hoped to avoid. |

you will find that alot of ISP block port 80 so people wont host sites.
im assuming this is a webserver, have you tried 8080?
Another thing i heard about Verison is they give you an internal number, not an external number. I dont know if this is true, i will be calling them up today to do some price quotes for a business line as i need a static ip address for VPN and other various activities. |

If they allowed everyone to run servers off a FIOS connection, half the country would have little data centers in their basement

-Chris | Well, mine's reallly only a blog and place for friends locally, so that isn't a concern for them here. Now as for bt, well, it'll have to makeup for that 5mb a week that comes from my server I guess :\
Edit--8080 didn't work, and one more question, why would they block it on fios and not their normal dsl service, that kinda stumps me. As well, my bt was throttled on normal, but not on fios.

Because with the fios you can upload much much more data. In reality the internet is charged on the ammount of data you send. Your ISP comes up with a round number and bills you that. Some people go way over and that is covered by the people who are way under. In reality my parents shouldnt pay the ammount that I do for internet because they just check their e-mail while I do tons of stuff. If they allowed servers TONS of data would be hosted on those lines and they would have to switch to a billing method that charged you by the ammount of bw you used each month. Plus the whole legal issue of what is being hosted. Hope I made some sense in all of that... |
