Do i need to open 6881 ports?

    Hey everyone,

Ive got a netgear router which connects to networked pcs to the internet via broadband at 512kbps. i use azureus to download torrents and ive got a max download speed at around 60ish KBps. Now i read some places that i need to open up ports 6881-6889 on my firewall to make my downloads faster. But isnt 60k the fastest i can get using 512kbps?? Anyhow i opened the ports on my router firewall using the setup page (Another question: when i opened the ports it asked for 'SEND TO LAN SERVER' - i put the IP address of my router but am i suppsed to use the IP address of the PC??).

Anyway, do i need to open the ports up using windows firewall or allow windows firewall to make an exception for azureus as well??

    Thanks for any reply

PS. Also can anyone tell me what the UPnP framework is for and if windows firewall should make an exception for it too? Thanks

Well the torrents that I have used allow you to upload at the same time as downloading to help everyone else out with bandwidth. If you have all your ports blocked you won't be uploading. To start uploading you will have to open the ports on your windows firewall and on your router.

i do upload tho, on my azureus screen right now i 2 things downloading, one at 24KB/s and uploading at 10 KB/s, and the other downloading at 38KB/s and uploading at 6.5KB/s. I have opened the ports on my router (i think*) but not on my windows firewall. If i do open them on the windows firewall would it increase much bearing in mind that im only on a 512k broadband so the maz dload speed is around 70ish neway.

    * PS> THis is what the netgear supprt page says on opening ports on my DG834G router. I use AOL.

To Create a New Inbound or Outbound Rule

Submit the router's address in an Internet browser. (The default is 192.168.0.1).
Enter the router's username and password.
From the main menu, click Security > Rules.
Click Add for inbound or outbound traffic, as appropriate to the application you are planning to run.
Select the Service. The services the router knows about are listed in the drop down. If the service you want is not listed, add it as described in the next section.
Select the Action, for example ALLOW always.
*For Send to LAN Server, enter the IP address of the local server. Note that this is also the IP address the computers on your LAN will access. *
For WAN User choose Any, or limit access to particular IP addresses.
For Log selection it is reasonable to turn logs on, especially at the beginning when you are unsure of the result of the changes you are making. Later, you may want to set logs to "Never" for performance reasons.
    Click Apply.
As noted in user manual for some models:

Consider using the Dynamic DNS feature on the Advanced menu, so that external users can find your network when the DHCP lease is renewed by your ISP.
*If your own LAN server uses DHCP, and your IPs change on rebooting, consider using the Reserved IP Address feature in the LAN IP menu. *

The thing im gettin stuck on is the SEND TO LAN SERVER part. What IP address do i use - my router or my PCs? And also the bottom starred section? Whats that about??

THanks for your reply, i realli appreciate if u can help sum more

i noticed that when i didnt have the port forwarded for BT my download speeds were like 5K and below.

You can do it, just to see if it helps any at all

The speeds all depend on the seeders and whatnot tho.
