    Win2000 Dial up Help

Hey guys I recently repaired a computer for a guy (installed 2000 and transfered files) and then returned it to him and set up his internet. Everything worked fine when I left but then he called me the next day and said that he got some warnings (pop-ups) that he needed to install these patches or his computer was going to crash. So he said he clicked on some and I came over and there were about 5 virus' on his computer plus a couple more that headband found. Anyways it won't connect to the internet anymore at his house. I haev queried the modem and it queries fine, I have tested the jack and it has a dial tone, I have called the number he dials to and it works fine. But everytime I try to dial-up at his house I hear a faint dialing (very faint more like a clicking) then it says Error 680: No Dial Tone. I had to go so Headband went out to try to fix it. He couldn't get it so he took it home and tried it at his house and it worked no problem. Dialed right up to the internet (still using the same number and ISP). Is it possilbe that overnight the phone line itself from the computer to the jack got screwed up? Also Com2 always says that it could not start or there aren't enough resources to start it. Could this be fixed by adding more memory? And one last thing, with SP4 how do you get a pen drive to work? My pen drive works in his computer when I uninstall SP4 but when it is installed it sees it as an unknown device. Thanks guys!

I dont think that adding memory will increase the resources.....usually you just need to turn some stuff off...

of course win2000 doesnt have msconfig but you can either copy msconfig from another computer or use startup ctrl panel http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

did you get rid of the viruses?

yah I think we got rid of them all, but oddly there was a virus in C:\WinNT\System32\msconfig.exe

So just disable some startup items? lol this is a fresh install of 2000, it was giving me that error after only the OS was installed. . .

    google for it then...

If by com2 it means serial port 2 I would go into the bios and turn off the second serial port...or even both of them if you dont need it

ok, well it says that it is in use, there is nothing connectied to the serial ports but it says COM1 and COM2 are in use but COM2 can't find enough resources to start.

Will try to find something on it
