winme to xp lan connection
i cant seem to get a connection. i know my nics are good and my cat5 cable is good, but i cant connect to each pc. my status says im connected. when i try to ping my winme pc i get host unreachable. i turned off firewall on xp pc but still nothing. ive been out of the network scene for awhile and im probably just overlooking something. maybe someones just going to have to walk me through this before i take a bat after both of them.

im no network master, but try setting up the IPs manually to like 192.168.0.100 and 192.168.0.101 with a gateway 255.255.255.0... sometimes XP gets fussy with these things.
might work...AMD Opteron 146 2.8ghz 280x10
1GB GEIL ONE S PC3200
DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D
ATI X1800XT @ 700/800
Enermax Noisetaker 485W

Are they plugged into a router? Do you have DCHP enabled on the router to assign the IP addresses? Can you ping the router?

you might have to set the WinME machine to have the "primary network logon" to "client for microsoft networks"
right click "my network places"/properties and youll see it"Even a fool is thought to be wise if he is silent"

May 7th, 2005, 08:09 PM #7it is set to client for microsoft networks. at first when i pinged the winme pc, i was getting host unreachable, now im getting request time out. so im getting closer. also i set the winme pc to obtain ip automatically and it was getting an ip of 169.xxx.xxx.xxx the xp pc had a range of 169.xxx.xxx.xxx so i manually set the ip for the me pc.

Your ip addresses are on different subnets. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.101. Make the 192.168.0.1 this 192.168.1.102 and see what happens.
And make sure the workgroup name is the same on both pc's.

did you change the workgroup name so they matched?
on the xp machine....are the "computer browser" and "server" services set on "auto"? if not try em on auto by running "services.msc" and setting them etc
also of course on the xp machione check and make sure "client for microsoft networks" is installed.....I suppose it is in the same place or close as where you checked on the Me box.....we had this huge thread once trying to fix a guys issue and it was that his XP box was missing "client for microsoft windows" (which I never thought of)"Even a fool is thought to be wise if he is silent"
