| Remote Access Programs
Does anyone have any suggestions for Remote Access programs (Preferably Free)?
I have a relative who needs help with their computer, but I am moving over the summer and wont be able to be visit anymore. Is there any program that I could download on each computer so that I could control her computer through mine. I've tried a few before, but never really liked them. I went so far as to even use NetBus, but could never get it to work.
BTW, I have cable internet while she has 56k, would this pose any problems? |

firstly, with xp pro, it come for free - so if you happen to have XP pro on your computer, you can send a request to her computer. If she has XP home, she can receive the request, but not send (if my memory serves me correctly).
Method:
get her to go to www.whatismyip.com and get her IP.
then, go to start -> run -> type in "mstsc.exe" (obviously without the quotes)
then you must log in with her username and password. (note she MUST have a username and password specified)
------------------
if she does not have XP, then try real vnc. same method for connecting to her computer for IP address, but it will span operating systems. |

No xp pro here nor there....
EDIT: and with vnc I would have to get her to go to whatismyip.com IP every time?

Therefore... http://www.realvnc.com/
you'll need the server, and she'll need the client.
Also, you're going to hate the lag present in cable->dial up, it will be grueling. Bring your lunch. |

i like to use remote assistance built into msn messenger for this kind of thing...just like remote desktop but you don't need pro and no hassle of getting the configoration right

broadband connections mean you usually keep the same i.p. for a long time, so she would only need to supply you with her i.p. address again if you had problems connecting to the last one she supplied you with.
/edit.
i just noticed you said she is on 56k, so yes, more visits to find out her i.p., unless you teach her how to find it directly from her computer settings.

I don't think Ultr@vnc requires you to get your IP each time. Get it at sourceforge.net .

Is there anything that is very user-friendly but still have allow for a lot of accessibility? It might just be me but VNC seems kinda complicated from the screenshots...
but it def seems unanimous among the responses in this thread
Im not too good when it comes to things like TCP/IP and opening ports and all that other junk... |
