One PC card wireless card works, one doesn't.

My wireless network has worked close to perfect for the past year and a half. Recently my IBM notebook wireless adapter started acting a little goofy. So bad that I had to buy a new one. The install went as smooth as possible and I successfully used it all last night without one problem. Today, no such luck. I keep getting an error saying that it can't aquire a network address. Or, it says it's connected, but no sites will load (sometimes Windows and the Netgear utiltiy disagree).

    My router is a Netgear MR814v2 - 802.11b
My original PC card is an IBM 802.11b card
    My new PC card is a Netgear WG511T - 802.11g 108Mbps

Network settings - SSID broadcast dissabled, WEP 128 bit, allowing only specific MAC address (yes I updated the router with the new MAC address)

Using XP Pro on a T22 notebook.

I know the network is active because I have other systems using it without a problem. Additionally, I can remove the new card and replace it with the old card and everything works fine. So I think the TCP/IP settings are fine. If I place the new card back in, same problem.

I've googled this problem without any solution.

when it says connected, do an ipconfig so we can see if it is getting an ip address or not

can you ping the router at all?

Are you running the network card software and windows wireless at the same time? I suggest you remove on or disable the other. Dont have both running a the same time.

Sounds like it might be an encryption issue if your connected but don't have conntectivity via IP. I would also probably enable SSID broadcast. It provides virtually no legitimate security layer to your WLAN and can occasionally cause client issues. If your associating though then disabled SSID broadcast isn't the problem. If you can send but not receive (check the WLAN connection icon) then it is a misconfig of WEP or WPA or a conflict with encryption.

Windows wireless config was off and I was using the Netgear software. I could (sometimes) ping the router, but couldn't connect to anything past it.

I eventually disabled the Netgear software and re-enabled Windows wireless and the new card worked. This is ok, but I really would prefer to use the Netgear software, as there are a number of nice features there.

I'll try enabling SSID broadcast and remove the encyption to see if that temporarily solves the problem.

    Thanks for the help.
