I need your expertise. Thanks for any help in advance.
The problem:
I cannot get online using my router. I can get online if I connect the computer directly to the cable modem. I need the router to serve several computers in the family network.
The router previously worked fine with a Westell InfoSpeed DSL modem in NY before we moved to NC and switched to Road Runner with a brand new Motorola 5100 cable modem.
So my first obvious guess is that the router has trouble talking properly with the new cable modem. So I've been playing mostly with the router's configuration file.
I have already tried the following.
1. Each time I change the configuration, I check for proper hardware connectivity: Checked all cables and powered down all systems for > 3 minutes & powered up in the suggested sequence, namely, cable modem, router, computer.
2. Checked all LED status lights:
a. Motorola lights are all fine - I know the Motorola works fine.
b. Netgear LED status lights: - All lights are normal as before.
3. Checked router configuration file against ipconfig report when my computer is connected directly to the cable modem and works properly (ie connects to the internet)
a. setup as follows: my name and password at the proper domain (nc.rr.com)
Service name: nc.rr.com (the local Road Runner)
Encapsulation - PPPOE
Static IP
Static DNS server (primary and secondary)
MAC spoofing on (the Road Runner install guy tried once to bring the cable modem connnection through my router but since it failed, he said that it wasn't really supported, not was it his job to troubleshoot the router, so he simply went ahead and connected the cable modem directly to my computer. Therefore, I use MAC spoofing in my router config file.)
b. I am assuming a PPPOE and a static IP as the ipconfig reports back the same IP whenever I am connected properly.
c. I also assume that it is OK that after the router is placed back in line, the IP address changes to 192.168.0.2 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0.
Questions:
1. After connecting the router, should the default gateway and the DHCP server now be listed in the ipconfig utility as the router's IP address (192.168.0.1)?
2. Does the Lease obtained provide any information about the status of the connection? (It does obtain a new lease when I plug in the router, but it may simply be coming from the router and not the cable modem.)
3: Must I change the LAN TCIP properties in WIN XP? (It worked fine before when I was using the DSL modem in NY with verizon.
Any suggestions or advice?
