Win XP Pro SP1 to Win XP Pro SP2

Hi, this is my first post in this forum, and so first of all id like to say a big "hello" to what seems to be an amazing community!

    My Problem is the following:
At home i have a direct connection cable network between A.) XP Pro Sp1 and B.)XP Home SP2.

This works fine, by simply adding the pcs as users on both machines, and setting IP to "automatic". With this network i can share the Internet Connection, and the Files on both PC without any problems.

Now, my Girlfriend has moved in, and she would like to connect to the internet with her laptop. Unfortunatley her Uni has kind of "hi-jacked" her Laptop. Her Login can only access the PC, when loggin into the Schools domain. When trying to setup a network connection, it always wants to go through this domain.
After asking for the admin pass several times, ive reseted it, and now have access to the pc via the admin. - I thought that by setting the domain, to my workgroup would fix the connection problems. But it doesnt.
Ive disabled the firewall, set TCP/IP to automatic, erased the domain and all the Laptop says is "network cable unplugged". But when i connect my laptop back, it gets a connection within seconds.
Ive tried installing netbios, with no effect...
    What else can i do?

    Thanks for any comments,
    Henning

Save all the stuff she needs on her laptop and re-install XP w/ SP 1 and you should be good to go.

Good lord. Don't format and install over something as minor as this. Now a repair might be worth trying but even that is an extreme response at this point. Just elaborate on how your current network is setup so we can get a better idea of what questions to ask and advice to give.

    Weird stuff.

My work laptop belongs to a domain. I take it home, boot it up and put in my ID and password. After a minute or so, I think it gives up trying to find the work domain and hooks up to my home network fine.

Does she have a wireless card in the laptop?

Actually it's probably just using cached credentials. In the absence of a DC to authenticate XP will just use the cached credentials of a successful domain login. There is a limit to how many times XP will allow this but it is a common practice. Same thing with Win2000. Both keep credentials cached for the last 10 user profile logins. This can however be disabled by GPO if the administrator(s) are security minded.
