Hey guys,
does winxp support WEP only for its Centrino M Wireless adapaters? I enabled WPA on the new router/ap, but there is no area for config to enable anything other than WEP?
Unless i'm just an idiot and know nothing about xp networking. I usually use software that comes with the pcmcia card, never used integrated wi-fi and never had windows take over the connection.
thanks. |

yep, you're right. I figured out how to enable it....but its worthless. I went downstairs and lost connection. I was on WPA - TKIP and have 3 laptops and configured them all. They were all at low signal, and 24mbps. As soon as I walked outside with one of the laptops, signal was dead. So i just disabled broadcast of SSID and shut off encryption. And my pc's are now back to normal at full signal. There are 4-5 networks that come up when i do a scan, all with broadcasted SSID's...
If someone wants to hack me, I'll take the chance.
Its ignorant people like me that wont compromise distance for security |

Disabling broadcasting of the SSID does nothing, there are plenty of programs that will see those networks. |

so you suggest i go on WPA-PSK TKIP and just take the loss of quality to make sure that i'm secure ? I guess your right....i'm sure a signal boster would work too right? |

how far of a distance are you wanting to reach with your network?
What kind of setup do you have?
What equipment are you using right now? |

What equipment are you using right now? | I'm using a D-LINK wireless router/G Access point.
I have 1 xp box, 1 xp laptop, 2 2k laptops.
They are in all different areas of the house. When I turn encryption on, all the laptops get about 15-20mbps in the location that they are in. Once I move the laptop outside, or downstairs....I lose signal. I usually always go into the basement for quiet time to do some work on the laptop.
Normally, with encryption off, I can go 2 houses down and still have decent signal. So i'll be compromising distance for encryption...but i'm sure I can purchase a signal booster for a broaders range right? |
