Hey I have an update on that third belkin router which came in. It too was having the same problems. While I was fighting with it, my Telephone Adapter from AT&T Callvantage arrived. I plugged the Belkin router into the TA, then plugged the TA into the cable modem. VIOLA! Everything's working! In one of my conversations with Belkin support, they mentioned that the wireless signals may be interfering with the connection to the cable modem. My guess is that the TA placed between the router and the cable modem must have acted as a buffer to isolate the interference. Well, whatever the reason it does work now, but I'm still not too happy with Belkin.

So in theory, should having a wired connection to a router give the same performance as a direct connection to the modem? I'm thinking of getting a router (just for when my partner brings her laptop round) but I don't want to compromise my connection that i use every day.
Btw, I'm thinking of getting this one, any good?

You are not alone. I had this exact same problem with a netgear FVS318v3 router and my Motorola SB-5101 cable modem.

Netgear sent me 3 replacement modems but all suffered the same problem. They were unable to solve the problem. In the end they sent me another model and it works perfectly.

I can only suggest you do the same thing. try a different model or make.

have you ever considered looking to see what other wireless networks are in your area and what channel they reside on?

also, do you have a cordlesss phone that happens to operate on the 2.4 GHz band?

if they are 2.4 GHz, they will kill the connection to the wireless network if either the phone or the base station or both are between the access point and the wireless adapter at any range. usually when a call comes in, but it is possible the base station polls the telephone every so often for different reasons... depends on how it is designed.

point being, interfearence needs to be considered since so many 2.4 GHz devices exist out there.
