    Lightbulb Networking two different OS's

I have XP on a network. I'm installing Linux on another unit. Can the Linux unit join the network and will it interact with the XP units ?

join the network? Since you only mention XP there isn't really any "joining" done. If they are on the same IP subnet and can ping each other they're already on the same network. Can the two network, share files, printers etc? Yes. Use Samba for SMB traffic on the Linux machine.

I'll clarify: I have a computer on an existing netork with 2 other users with their own computers. All units run XP. Can my Linux unit connect to the netwok and share internet access and files (pictures, music, etc.). Forgive me if I'm being vague, but I don't know a great deal about networking.

they will share internet no problem, but as kwebb was saying, you'll need samba in order to share files/printers. what distro are you using?
