Okay, so I'm in the middle of convincing my dad to get Cable, since my DSL connection is more like a 56k connection and he wanted me to ask a question here:
The question is this: If he sets up the network a different way and reinstalls the software, will our connection run faster?
We're currently setup like this:
Verizon DSL Modem is connected to the 2Wire Ethernet Router which is then connected to the Linksys Wireless Router. The original computer with the Verizon/2Wire software used to install them is no longer in use.
If we reinstall the software on our new computers and resetup our entire network, will we get the 3MB promised speeds? |

I'm betting no. The software is to setup the modem. The modem is already working if you can get online. |

We can't be online without the 2Wire router for some reason. We already tried disconnecting it. |

If your phone lines are bad, no. My dad has 40 year old underground lines, and his DSL was slower than dial up. I tried to down load AOL and Dial up was supposed to take 2.5 hrs and it took 3hrs with DSL. |

We don't know how old our phone lines are, really. This is a 50 or so year old house so we might have extremely old lines, but I don't believe we're slower than 56k. I definitely know that we're nowhere near 3MB or even 1MB. I'm thinking we're at the 128k range, which explains my download speeds of 10-15kbps or lower.
My dad submitted a support ticket and is working with Verizon to find out what the problem is and how we can make our connection faster. |

have you tried to run one of those bandwidth test sites?
if not see what they say and post the results
Also what speeds are Verizon offering to you? |

Verizon offers a 3MB speed, but we're getting nowhere near that.
I already have run one of those tests and it says I'm using only 5% of what Verizon supposedly offers and it also says that I'm only 2 times faster than 56k.
EDIT: Okay, I ran a test to prove my point:
:::.. Download Stats ..:::
Connection is:: 236 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 386 kB)
Download Speed is:: 29 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net/ (server1)
Test Time:: Sun Aug 14 2005 15:34:34 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
Bottom Line:: 4X faster than 56K 1MB download in 35.31 sec
Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 5.48 % of your hosts average (verizon.net)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-QBKYZW195 |

ow...10-15kbps downlaod speeds...that is way slow for your dsl which I am sure you know. I doubt anything you do to your set-up will increase your speeds which is unfortunate. However, I would tryu to set it up only using 1 router. |
