Is this problem on all the machines? Is it the right type of cable from modem to router?
I think it should be patch rather than crossover.

Yes all the machine are having the same problems, I can ping an IP but will not connection on the net like yahoo.com I have to hit refresh a few time to get it to open anything,
and I'm also a cable technician, I have the right cable for the router, there are no cross-over cables on anything, but the Win2kserver

Okay. First thing is to simplify. Try one pc direct to the modem.

I tryed that and it did the same thing, I then call RR = roar runner and they said there are no problems, I then had them check the ping time on the modem and they said there were no problems,
sorry I'm at work right know, will be home in about 5 hours
I haven't done the fireware on the router yet, but I heard this doesn't fix anythingLast edited by JerryReis; August 29th, 2005 at 02:42 PM.

Usually problems like this are DNS related. You should check to make sure the "hosts" file doesn't have entries in it that should not be there.

If any of your pcs has a pots modem in, then try connecting to your backup connection number, to try and diagnose between a software configuration and a hardware problem.

I'm starting to think it might be the router but not for sure

August 29th, 2005, 02:59 PM #12When you say firewall, do you mean your router? The "hosts" file is not on the firewall. It is a file on each pc. If this file was modified somehow, it can block access to websites. google.com's ip address is 216.239.57.99. If the hosts file points to a different ip address for google.com, then it can never be accessed.sorry you lost me on that one, where do I find that on the firewall

The hosts file is in C:\windows on a normal windows9x install, or try C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc on an XP system

yes ( Firewall) is router
where can I find the file on a Win2000 machine

August 29th, 2005, 03:02 PM #15How did you do this? Did you power down the router, the cable modem and the pc first. Then tuen on the router, wait 15 seconds, then turn on the cable modem, wait for it to link up, then turn on the pc? If you didn't then its quite possible none of them would work.I tryed to connect all the machine one at a time to the modem to see if this would be a software problem and it did the same thing

August 29th, 2005, 03:04 PM #16That is why I said direct to the modem, to make sure the router wasn't causing problems. If you are experiencing the same problems in Linux, then a software problem is extremely unlikely. Make sure you try at least one machine direct to the modem, without using the router.

OK. Try what paul9 said using one machine connected directly to the modem (use an xp or w2k box). But first power down the modem and the pc. Turn on the modem and let it link up. Then turn on the pc. See what happens. If it still won't work, open the command prompt and type "ipconfig /all" and post the results here.

What results do you get when you ping 66.102.7.99 (google)?
How many sites can you not reach?
What are your current dns settings?
I'm beginning to suspect that your cable feed may not be all it could be.
Edit out your own IPs, if you want.
