What is it about DSL modems and their lack of availability at any normally local computer tech store? Most of my searches of the major stores produce either cable modems, which are completely different than DSL modems, or a plethora of wireless hubs and/or networking accessories.
I’ve got Verizon DSL and for those of un aware their DSL modems are something else on top of the fact that they are bundled with wireless hubs that have very weak signal strength.
So here I am looking for a DSL modem and I guess I will have to settle on buying one from the Internet instead of the safety of a local store. So, question is, which one do you suggest/use and what is an acceptable price range? I’m finding some on Price Watch up to and over $100, that seems to me to be a lot considering that most DSL providers include a free modem on sign-up so they can’t be that expensive.
Thanks for your help.
ALD.
Also – What is the suggested “best” configuration, an all-in-one jobber or separate modem and router w/wireless support.
Thanks.

I have an Actiontec DSL wireless gateway provided by my ISP. FYI, it is a piece of JUNK.

It really depends what kind of DSL Verizon is providing you. While most are asymetrical (aDSL), one wouldn't want to gear you towards an aDSL modem if you had a symmetric or other type of DSL connection (rare possibility, but still possible). I would first ask Verizon what they recommend.
That said, we have had very good reliability out of the Speedstream set of DSL modems. |

So would it be logical to consider using a separate wireless router (8 Port) that is more user friendly and configurabley stable in conjunction with my current Verizon/Westel with all wireless and firewall features turned off?
A major problem I have is that whenever I try to enable wireless security features all my wireless systems loose connectivity. I can read and follow directions but something just isn’t right and subsequently all wireless items loose out. So I am figuring a separate wireless router but the problem that I come up with is how to access the router when both will have the same IP access address. I have got to be able to control the verizon modem/router and the add-on router as well.
Any Ideas?

When you change the wireless router to use WEP or WPA, are you changing the clients to use the same security as the router?
If you're just doing this for wireless, you don't need a second router - you need a wireless AP. Just shut off the wireless access for your Verizon router before setting up the wireless AP. |
